Raiders Remain Top Team in Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings

Published on November 14, 2018 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Toronto, Ont. - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week nine edition of the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2018-19 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

Holding onto the top spot in the CHL were the Prince Albert Raiders, whose lone game of the week saw them defeat the Swift Current Broncos by a 6-2 score last Friday. The game featured a four-point performance by overage forward Noah Gregor (San Jose Sharks). After recording 65 points (29G-36A) with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Victoria Royals, Gregor has produced 17 points (8G-9A) in 13 games with the Raiders this season, placing him fourth in team scoring. Gregor and the Raiders are back in action Wednesday, November 14 (7:00 p.m. CT), playing host to the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The second-highest ranked WHL team continued to be the Vancouver Giants, who split a pair of low-scoring games against the Prince George Cougars this past weekend, moving them into sixth spot in the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings. Winning 2-1 Saturday and losing 1-0 Sunday, the Giants still maintained their lead in the B.C. Division, while sharing the lead at the top of the Western Conference standings. 2019 NHL Draft prospect Trent Miner was in net for Saturday's victory, giving him a 5-0-1-0 record, 1.35 goals-against-average, a 0.955 save percentage, as well as a single shutout. The Giants' home stand continues Friday, November 16 (7:30 p.m. PT) when they play host to the Regina Pats at the Langley Events Centre.

Staying firm in the ninth spot this week were the Red Deer Rebels, who won twice and lost once on their weekend road trip through the East Division. Friday against the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Rebels saw their three-game winning streak end in a 6-3 loss. They quickly got over the defeat though, winning 4-3 in a shootout Saturday against the Moose Jaw Warriors and winning 3-2 in overtime against the Swift Current Broncos Sunday. Rebels forward Brandon Hagel (Chicago Blackhawks) continues to lead the team with 30 points (13G-17A) in 18 games this season, placing him seventh in WHL scoring. The Rebels will play host to the Kelowna Rockets on Friday, November 16 (7:00 p.m. MT) at the Enmax Centrium for their next contest.

Earning honourable mentions this week were the Everett Silvertips and Portland Winterhawks.

The Silvertips completed a three-game road trip with six points, winning twice against the Kamloops Blazers and once against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Though he saw his point streak snapped at seven games, forward Riley Sutter (Washington Capitals) became the first member of the Sutter family to record a point streak of that length in more than a decade. Brandon Sutter was the last to reach that mark, doing so with the Red Deer Rebels from December 7, 2007 to January 19, 2008.

Portland also enjoyed a pair of victories against a B.C. Division club, downing the Kelowna Rockets twice at home. Captain Cody Glass (Vegas Golden Knights) continued to deliver for the Winterhawks, adding five points (1G-4A) this past weekend to give him 34 points (7G-27A) on the season. Along with teammate Joachim Blichfeld (San Jose Sharks), the Winterhawks are the only WHL team to have two players in the top 10 in league scoring.

Both teams will be in search of a valuable two points when the Winterhawks and Silvertips meet at Angel of the Wins Arena on Wednesday, November 14 (7:05 p.m. PT).
