Raging Tide Defeat Mavs 10-2 in Season Opener
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME- The Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide erupted for 10 runs to seal a 10-2 home-opening victory against the Seacoast Mavericks to kick off the 2013 season at The Ballpark. Matt Pagano (Cranston, RI/ Marist College) led the Tide offense going 3-4 with five RBI.
The home side stuck first, as Pagano drove home Sam Canales (Saco, Maine/ Bowdoin) with a two out single in the bottom of the second. The Mavs responded with two runs in the top of the third however, with Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ/ Sacred Heart) crossing home on a fielder's choice after leading off the inning with a double. Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, NJ/ SNHU) would then drive home Keegan Pafford (Greenland, NH/ URI) to give Seacoast a 2-1 advantage.
Old Orchard Beach would have their biggest inning in the fourth, crossing home five runs, and taking the lead for good. Mekae Hyde (Lewiston, ME/ Bates) drove in Dylan Begin (St. Albans, VT/ UMass), then Pagano would follow up with another single to bring in Canales. The Tide capitalized on a passed ball by the catcher, as Graham McIntire (Concord, NH/ Marist) and Hyde scored.
The Tide added to their lead, scoring four in the fifth, with Pagano clearing the bases with a triple that found the alley in right center. McIntire picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Pagano to give OOB a 10-2 lead.
Seacoast would be held to just one hit in the final three innings, as the Raging Tide bullpen pitched five innings, yielding just three hits, while striking out six.
Louis Distasio (Westbrook, ME/ URI) was credited with the victory, pitching two innings of relief and striking out four.
Tim Holmes (Jacksonville, FL/ San Jacinto) took the loss for the Mavs, tossing 3.1 innings, giving up five earned runs, while striking out eight.
The Raging Tide will return to action at The Ballpark tomorrow as they take on the Brockton Rox at 7pm.
