Rage Players Look Back at Arch Rivalry Games
Published on August 8, 2007 under United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
St. Charles, MO - With the upcoming "Arch Rivalry" game between the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois being held on Saturday, September 1st at The Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, two RiverCity Rage players looked back at their experiences from Rivalry games of the past. Rage linebacker Joe Bevis and receiver Travis Williams both played for the Fighting Illini in the 2002 and '03 Rivalry games. Safety Tauras Ferguson played for the Tigers in the '02 contest as well.
"It was the first game of the year, so of course we were amped up," said Bevis. "Because we were playing against Mizzou made it even more important. A lot of our guys went to Mizzou football camps in high school, but all I got from them was a questionnaire to fill out and I never heard from Mizzou again. I wanted to show them that they missed out on a great player."
Bevis, a two-time all-state performer at Edwardsville (IL) High School, forced two fumbles and registered seven tackles as his Fighting Illini fell to the Tigers, 33-20, in 2002.
"We played against a lot of their guys in high school," recalled Williams. "It was fun because all we had to do was get on the phone and we could talk smack all week. I almost committed to Mizzou. I had the phone in my hand. But at the last minute, I decided to go to Illinois."
Williams, who played locally for East Alton - Wood River (IL) High School, had 10 tackles and a forced fumble for Illinois in their 22-15 loss to Mizzou in 2003.
