Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Racers announced today that they have extended pitcher, Laura Winter's contract for the 2016 season. "Laura Winter is a fierce competitor in the circle," noted Racers GM, Joey Arrietta. "She is healthy and stronger than I have ever seen her. I'm excited for her and our 2016 team."
After injury forced Winter out of action for her entire rookie campaign, the 6-foot-1 pitcher came out ready to fire in 2015. Winter made her professional debut on May 31, 2015 in the Racers' second game of the season, throwing four shutout innings in relief to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in extra innings over the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
One week later, the right-hander made her only start of the 2015 season, picking up a no-decision after allowing just one earned run on two hits in four and one-third innings of work in an 8-4 win over the 2015 NPF Cowles Cup Champions, the Chicago Bandits.
Both appearances were in a stretch of allowing one or fewer earned runs in five of Winter's first six appearances. A span covering 15 innings in which Winter allowed seven earned runs on 17 hits and two walks while striking out seven.
In 2015, Winter was second on the Racers in fewest walks allowed per inning behind Hannah Campbell, allowing just over one walk per every five innings, and placed third behind Sarah Pauly and Lisa Norris allowing just 1.42 hits per inning pitched.
Winter was the Fighting Irish's Co-MVP her senior season in 2014 at Notre Dame, posting a 2.30 ERA, allowing only 41 walks in 228 and two-thirds innings pitched while fanning 268 hitters. In addition to her abilities in the circle, Winter batted .304 at the plate to cap a career in which she was named to the
All-Conference First Team in each of her four years at Notre Dame. She was the Big East Player of the Year as a junior.
Winter joins Pauly as the second veteran pitcher returning to the 2016 Racers' roster.
