AKRON, OH - The Akron Racers signed fifth-round draft pick, infielder Emily Messer, the 31st overall selection in the 2016 NPF Draft. Messer, a third baseman from the University of South Alabama, became the third 2016 selection to sign with Akron, joining pitcher Hannah Perryman (UMSL) and catcher Hannah Day (Troy).

"Emily is a proven competitor that brings a solid work ethic from Coach Clark's crew at South Alabama," explained GM Joey Arrietta. "She gives us much more depth in the infield and will be a valuable offensive asset in her first season in Akron."

Messer broke the Jaguars' single-season record for batting average (.429) and hits (76), respectively, in a senior season that saw her earn First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference for the first time. Messer was named to the All-Tournament Team for the third time in her career.

Messer, who was named a semifinalist for the Senior CLASS Award, also tied the career record for triples in South Alabama history with 10, after hitting five in 2016. Messer also moved into second place in the Jaguar record books with 141 runs scored and 208 hits in her career. The left-handed hitter is also fourth with 50 career stolen bases.

The Racers added dependable security at an important spot with the selection of Messer. Veteran Kelley Montalvo has been as dependable as they come in her seven year career with Akron, but Messer provides insurance as a player that has called the hot corner home in her collegiate career, while also providing versatility to play other positions around the diamond.

Messer became the third South Alabama player to be chosen in the NPF Draft in as many years with her selection this year, joining former Racer first round pick, pitcher Hannah Campbell, in 2014 and pitcher Farish Beard of the Dallas Charge in 2015.

The Racers will kick off their 15th Season of Play on May 31 in York, Pennsylvania when they take on the Pennsylvania Rebellion in the NPF Season Opener. After a two-game series on the road, the Racers welcome fans to Firestone Stadium on June 8 th to begin their 15 th Season of Play against the Rebellion. Single game and season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by contacting the box office at 330-376- 8188 or online at www.akronracers.org.
