Akron Racers News Release

The Akron Racers' offense started with a boom in their exhibition game against the Ohio Collegiate All-Stars. The Racers scored seven runs in seven innings, while the All-Stars did not cross the plate once. The Ohio Collegiate All-Stars consisted of stand-out players from college teams across the state of Ohio.

Offensively for the Racers, Sharonda McDonald led off the first inning with a walk and advanced to third on a hit and run by Lisa Modglin. She scored the first run on a sacrifice fly hit by Sam Marder. After this, extra base hits gave the Racers a substantial lead. Briana Hesson, Modglin, and Nicole Trimboli all supported doubles, while Trimboli also put one over the right field fence. A wild pitch later in the game gave the Racers another run for a 7-0 lead.

The Ohio-Collegiate All-Stars went hitless for the first six innings, but in the seventh they broke through by getting two hits from Alex Helfrich (University of Akron) and Jordan McElroy (Miami University). Cleveland State University's Megan Bashak also reached base on a walk.

There were many faces on the mound for both teams. For the Racers, Kristina Thorson started the game allowing no hits and no runs, and then Jen Mineau came into the circle after three innings and gave the same performance. Lisa Norris finished the game, allowing two hits. For the All-Stars, Miami University's Jessica Simpson started the game and allowed four hits and one strikeout. Emlyn Knerem from Ashland University gave a solid performance with two strike-outs and two hits. Lastly, Cleveland State's Bashak finished the game.

The Racers open regular season play on Thursday against the Carolina Diamonds. Tickets are available and start at just $7 as the Racers open their 11th season of play.
