Racers Nab Four Awards at NPF Banquet
August 26, 2010 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
Akron Racers News Release
ST. CHARLES, La. - With the Championship Series slated to begin this evening the Akron Racers have already begun the weekend on a high note as four players received acclaim at the 2010 National Pro Fastpitch Awards Banquet held this afternoon.
Akron pitcher Lisa Norris dominated in the circle all season long en route to being named the Diamond Sports Pitcher of the Year. Norris led the league with 14 wins and also ended the regular season with the second-most strikeouts with a tally of 126 in addition to the second-lowest ERA with 1.73. In 18 starts, Norris threw 16 complete games and four shutouts in 137.2 innings pitched, leading the NPF in all aforementioned categories.
Lisa Modglin earned the distinction of Wilson Defensive Player of the Year in addition to taking home the NPF Diamond Spikes Award for most stolen bases in the league. Modglin has been nothing shy of impressive in the outfield for Akron this season. Patrolling centerfield all year long she made numerous defensive stops and robbed more than her fair share of would-be home runs. Modglin boasted a .988 fielding percentage and committed just one error in 49 games and led the league with 17 stolen bases to easily walk away with the NPF Diamond Spikes trophy.
Akron saw four members named to the All-NPF Team. In addition to Norris and Modglin who both repeat as back-to-back honorees following the 2009 campaign, veteran captain Jackie Pasquerella becomes the third Racer to earn the distinction two years running while rookie Jessica Valis rounds out the Racers quartet. Pasquerella finished the 2010 regular season with the third best batting average on the team with a .271 clip, amassing 29 hits and 10 RBI. Valis completed her first season with the squad, finishing with 32 hits - second most among the Racers to go along with four RBI and nine stolen bases.
The Racers begin their pursuit of a 2010 NPF Championship this evening at 7 pm EST when they face the USSSA Pride. Fans unable to attend can tune in from the comfort of their own homes by visiting http://www.mlb.com/mlb/mediacenter/npf.jsp or www.pointstreak.com.
