Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, OH - The Akron Racers have traded catcher Jessica Garcia to the USSSA Pride, the team announced today. The Racers picked up the Pride's first selection in the fifth round of the 2017 draft in exchange for Garcia.
With the addition of the Pride's draft pick Akron now own three draft picks in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. The Racers previously added a 2017 fifth round pick from the Scrap Yard Dawgs as part of a deal sending shortstop Nerissa Myers to Houston. Akron also added the first pick in the fourth round (20th overall) of the 2016 NPF College Draft in the deal for Myers.
Those crafty moves have given the Racers eight picks in the 2017 NPF College Draft, which matches the number of picks Akron currently has heading into the 2016 NPF College Draft in April. The Racers' stockpiling of draft picks has given them the second most picks in the 2016 NPF College Draft so far, behind only the expansion Dawgs, who have nine selections.
Garcia joined Akron as an undrafted free agent in the middle of the 2012 season. She enjoyed her greatest professional season to-date in 2014 when Garcia batted .274 and drove in 23 RBI, while blasting 5 home runs. She also hit .267 with two home runs in the NPF Championship Series that year, driving in five of the Racers seven runs over five games. In 2015, Garcia batted only .158 with one home run and drove in only five RBI.
