Akron Racers News Release
CONROE, TEXAS -- The Scrap Yard Dawgs took on the Akron Racers in Game Two of a three-game series at the Scrap Yard tonight and thanks in large part to a four-run first inning, Akron took home an 8-1 victory on Friday night.
The Racers jumped out with an early lead in the first inning with four hits in a row. Third baseman Kelley Montalvo smacked a double to the left-center field gap. Shortstop Sami Fagan followed with an RBI single to score Montalvo. After another base hit by designated player Sam Fischer, Shellie Robinson stepped in and punched a three-run home run over the left field fence to put the Racers up 4-0. Jaclyn Traina stopped the damage there with a strikeout of Griffin Joiner.
Former Mizzou Tiger, Emily Crane crushed a home run to dead centerfield to put the Dawgs on the board with a solo bomb in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 4-1. Traina and catcher Janelle Lindvall are given relief from Sara Driesenga in the circle with Taylore Fuller behind the dish in the top of the third inning.
Starting with pinch hitter, Geri Ann Glasco, the Racers delivered three RBI's in a row from Glasco, first baseman Sandra Simmons, and right fielder A.J. Andrews, respectively, to extend their lead in a 7-1 game going into the bottom of the third inning.
The Racers knocked in their final run in the top of the fifth inning by centerfielder Taylor Schlopy with an RBI single up the middle. The hit was Schlopy's 192nd career hit, tying her with former centerfielder Iyhia McMichael for the most career hits in franchise history.
A deep fly ball at the warning track from Montalvo was snagged by Emilee Koerner in right field to bring the Dawgs up to bat.
In the top of the sixth inning Sara Plourde entered the circle for the Dawgs with Meagan May Whitley taking over behind the plate. Plourde returns to the Dawgs after being away with Team Canada. Coming in hot, Plourde shut down the Racers' offensive momentum in the final two innings of play allowing no hits.
The Dawgs will be back tomorrow night for the final game Akron on August 6th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CDT/8:00 p.m. EDT with the game available on CBS Sports Network.
