QMJHL Weekend Preview

February 23, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The stretch run toward the playoffs is officially on, as only ten games remain on the Lewiston MAINEiacs' 2010-11 regular season schedule. Last week, the MAINEiacs split a pair of games, falling 4-3 at home to the Montreal Junior on Thursday, before winning by that same score on Sunday against the Rimouski Oceanic on the road. With Sunday's win, Lewiston finished the season series by taking five out of the six games that they played against the Oceanic, including all three at Colisee de Rimouski.

The MAINEiacs currently have a record of 36-20-0-2 (74 points), which remains good for second place in the Telus East Division. Quebec currently lead the division by nine points, while Lewiston leads third place Victoriaville by eight points, while also having one game in hand on the Tigres. In the overall standings, the MAINEiacs are currently in eighth place, trailing Gatineau by two points, Shawinigan by three points, and Acadie-Bathurst by four points. Lewiston, Gatineau, and Shawinigan have all played 58 games, while Acadie-Bathurst has played 59 games.

This weekend, Lewiston will face two different teams, beginning with a road contest in Chicoutimi against the Sagueneens on Thursday night. The MAINEiacs and Sagueneens have faced each other four times this season, with the home team winning on each occasion. Chicoutimi opened the season series by taking a 5-4 shootout win on September 18th. Since then, it has been all Lewiston, as the MAINEiacs picked up a 3-1 win on October 13th, a 7-4 win on November 24th, and a 5-2 win on January 30th. The Sagueneens enter the weekend with a 24-23-5-6 record (59 points), which is good for fourth place in the Telus East Division and 12th place overall.

On Friday and Sunday, the MAINEiacs will play a home-and-home series against the Drummondville Voltigeurs, beginning at Centre Marcel Dionne. Lewiston and Drummondville have met twice thus far this season, with the MAINEiacs winning both contests. On October 29th, Lewiston fell behind 2-0 and 3-2, before scoring three times in the third period for a 5-4 victory in Drummondville. The January 4th game wasn't as close, as the MAINEiacs routed the Voltigeurs 7-0 in Lewiston. Drummondville currently has a 38-14-5-2 record (83 points), which has them in second place in the Telus West Division and in fourth place overall.

This Weekend in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts enter the weekend on a three-game losing streak, but will have two divisional contests at home, as they look to turn things around. The Remparts will host Victoriaville on Friday, before welcoming Rimouski to town on Saturday. Quebec has lost seven of their last eight games against the Tigres, but the lone win came on February 2nd with a 10-0 final score.

The Victoriaville Tigres will get challenged this weekend, when they face two of the three division leaders in the QMJHL. The Tigres will travel to Quebec on Friday night for a divisional game with the Remparts, only to return home to be greeted by the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens will also be involved in divisional play this weekend, taking the ice three times in four days. The Sagueneens will start the week on Thursday with a home game against the MAINEiacs, before a home-and-home series against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Saturday and Sunday. The series will start in Baie-Comeau.

The Rimouski Oceanic will be faced with a similar situation to Victoriaville, as they will also battle two of the three division leaders. However, one of Rimouski's opponents is different, while both games will take place on the road. The Oceanic will visit the Montreal Junior on Friday, before facing the Quebec Remparts on Saturday.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar have two games this weekend - both against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Unlike a good portion of Baie-Comeau's weekend series, these two tilts will be played in two different cities. The Drakkar and Sagueneens will tangle in Baie-Comeau on Saturday, before a rematch in Chicoutimi on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Saint John Sea Dogs will be tested this weekend with three games in three days on the road against three teams in the top nine spots in the league. The Sea Dogs' journey starts in Gatineau on Friday, continues in Victoriaville on Saturday, and concludes in Shawinigan on Sunday.

The Montreal Junior will also be in action three times this weekend, except all three of their games will be played at home at Verdun Auditorium. The Junior will face a pair of Maritimes Division opponents to start and finish the week, as Acadie-Bathurst will make a visit on Wednesday, before Moncton goes in on Sunday. In between, Montreal will host Rimouski on Friday.

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Moncton Wildcats will have similar schedules this weekend, as both teams will play three games against teams from the Telus West Division. The Wildcats will start off in Rouyn-Noranda on Thursday, move onto Val-d'Or on Friday, and finish in Montreal on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Titan will begin in Montreal on Wednesday, continue in Rouyn-Noranda on Friday, and finish in Val-d'Or on Saturday.

The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies will have one additional game this weekend, as they will visit the Gatineau Olympiques on Sunday. Prior to that, Gatineau will play a home game against the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday, as well as a road contest against the Shawinigan Cataractes on Saturday afternoon. The Cataractes currently lead the Olympiques by one point in the overall standings, and have taken three of the five games in the season series.

Two other games will take place in the QMJHL this weekend, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will play host to the PEI Rocket on Friday and the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday. Last Friday, the Mooseheads won their first game against Cape Breton in six tries this season, winning 1-0 at Centre 200.
