QMJHL Weekend Preview

December 9, 2010 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

9 Dec 10 Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs have hit a minor bump in the road, as they have dropped each of their last four contests, after winning 13 of the previous 14. The skid started with a pair of road setbacks in Moncton and Saint John, before it continued at home on Sunday against Montreal and on Tuesday against Baie-Comeau. Tuesday's tilt was a back-and-forth battle that ultimately saw the Drakkar come out on top, 5-4. Despite the tough stretch of games, the MAINEiacs are still in good position in the standings, currently owning a record of 21-12-0-2 (44 points), which is good for second place in the Telus East Division and a tie for fourth place in the QMJHL.

After playing five games in eight days, the schedule will lighten up for a brief moment, as Lewiston's lone game this weekend takes place on Friday night. For the second week in a row, the opposition will be the Saint John Sea Dogs. On Wednesday afternoon, the Sea Dogs found out that they were ranked as the top team in the BMO CHL Top 10 Rankings, as the previously top ranked Mississauga St. Michael's Majors suffered a 6-5 loss to the Guelph Storm on Sunday. Saint John currently has a 26-3-0-2 record (54 points), has won ten straight games, and is unbeaten in regulation in 17 consecutive contests (16-0-0-1).

This Weekend in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts have won three straight games, and have extended their lead in the division to six points in the process. Quebec will head over to the Maritimes Division for a quick two-game road trip this weekend. On Saturday night, the Remparts will face Halifax, before a rematch of the 2006 President's Cup Final against Moncton on Sunday. Quebec defeated the Wildcats 4-2 in front of nearly 12,000 fans in October at Colisee Pepsi.

The Victoriaville Tigres have a three-point lead for third place in the division, and will control their own destiny with three games on the docket this weekend. Victoriaville's lone home game takes place on Thursday against Acadie-Bathurst, before the Tigres hit the road to battle Gatineau on Friday and Drummondville on Saturday. This is the final match-up of the season between the Tigres and Voltigeurs, with Drummondville having won each of the previous three.

The Rimouski Oceanic and Val-d'Or Foreurs are tied in the overall standings with 31 points each. Those two clubs will clash for a pair of games this weekend at the Colisee de Rimouski, as both teams try to get closer to the .500 mark.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens are coming off of their best week of the season, and will look to build on it this weekend. The Sagueneens will only take the ice once this weekend, playing host to Acadie-Bathurst on Friday night. Chicoutimi could have stamina as an advantage, as the Titan will have played the night before.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar have won two straight games for the first time all year, and will have two contests this weekend, as they try to gain ground on Halifax for the final playoff spot. Baie-Comeau will continue their road swing in Shawinigan (the team they beat for their first win of the season) on Thursday, before returning home to play Acadie-Bathurst on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

After playing in Lewiston on Friday, the Saint John Sea Dogs will return home to face the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday. Saint John will be looking to stay unbeaten in regulation at Harbour Station, where they currently own a record of 16-0-0-1.

The Montreal Junior got their week started early, defeating the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 5-1 on Wednesday morning. Two more games will take place at the Verdun Auditorium this week, as the Junior will look to build on their lead in the Telus West Division. Shawinigan pays a visit on Friday, before second place Drummondville invades Montreal on Sunday. Along with their game against Victoriaville, the Voltigeurs will also be home to Rouyn-Noranda on Friday night.

One week after their four-game venture to the Maritimes Division, the Gatineau Olympiques will return home for a pair of games at the Centre Robert Guertin. Victoriaville will be the visiting team on Friday, while Rouyn-Noranda will be the opposition on Sunday. The Olympiques currently trail Drummondville by two points for second place in the Telus West Division.

The PEI Rocket have slumped to a .500 record for the season, as they have lost seven of their last ten games. PEI will look to turn things around this weekend, as they will play a pair of home games against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday and Sunday.

Two other games will take place this weekend, as Moncton visits Halifax on Thursday, and Rouyn-Noranda visits Shawinigan on Saturday.
