Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Last weekend, the Lewiston MAINEiacs and Moncton Wildcats began their first round playoff series at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, with both teams picking up one victory. Moncton got the series started with a 4-1 win on Friday, before Lewiston responded with a 2-1 triumph of their own on Saturday.
The MAINEiacs got the scoring started on Friday night, as Jess Tanguy lit the lamp from the right circle midway through the first period. However, the momentum was quickly squashed, as Etienne Brodeur was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding. The Wildcats evened the score on the man advantage on a slap shot by Alex Saulnier. Moncton took the lead in the second period on a goal by Daniel Milan, before Ryan Penny and Allain Saulnier picked up insurance tallies in the third. Brandon Thibeau's 24 saves earned the win for the Wildcats, defeating Nicholas Champion, who stopped 22 shots.
In Saturday night's game, Lewiston opened the scoring again, as Michael Chaput rushed into the offensive zone, and put home a wrist shot from the slot. Olivier Dame-Malka gave the MAINEiacs a 2-0 lead early in the second, blasting a slap shot from just inside of the blueline. The Wildcats brought themselves within one in the latter stages of the middle frame on a one-timer by Allain Saulnier. Thanks to a solid defensive effort by the MAINEiacs, Moncton was unable to generate anything in the third period, as the home team picked up the 2-1 win. Nicholas Champion made 17 saves for Lewiston, while Brandon Thibeau stopped 25 shots for the Wildcats.
The series now shifts to Moncton for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday, with both games taking place at 6:00.
Other Series in the QMJHL
#1 Saint John Sea Dogs (2) vs. #16 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (0)
As expected, the series between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles hasn't been much of a contest. The Sea Dogs dominated the first two games at Harbour Station, blasting Cape Breton 10-0 in Friday's series opener, before a 7-1 beating took place on Saturday. Zack Phillips (4g, 4a) and Jonathan Huberdeau (3g, 5a) lead the league with eight points each, while Jacob DeSerres has stopped 33 of 34 shots in net.
#2 Montreal Junior (2) vs. #15 Halifax Mooseheads (0)
The Montreal Junior and Halifax Mooseheads began their series before everyone else, getting things started on Thursday night. The Mooseheads kept the series opener close, but in the end, the Junior prevailed with a 5-3 victory on home ice. One night later, the score was a bit more lopsided, as Montreal built a 2-0 series lead with a 6-0 shutout win over Halifax. Nicolas Chouinard leads the series with five points for the Junior (2g, 3a), and is followed closely by teammates Jeremy Gouchie (1g, 3a), Louis Leblanc (3g), and Francis Meilleur (3a). Jean-Francois Berube has both wins for Montreal, stopping 46 of 49 shots.
#3 Quebec Remparts (2) vs. #14 Val-d'Or Foreurs (0)
The Quebec Remparts finished the 2010-11 season with the second most goals in the QMJHL, and the Val-d'Or Foreurs have found out why in the first two games of their postseason series. Quebec rocketed past the Foreurs 7-2 in Friday's series opener, before taking Saturday's second game by a final score of 6-4. Jonathan Audy-Marchessault leads the way with seven points (4g, 3a) in the series for the Remparts, while Alex Wall (5a), Frederick Roy (3g, 1a), and Alexandre Grenier (1g, 3a) have also made significant offensive contributions. Louis Domingue was in goal for both wins by Quebec.
#4 Drummondville Voltigeurs (2) vs. #13 Chicoutimi Sagueneens (0)
The series between the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Chicoutimi Sagueneens started with a bang on Friday night, as the Voltigeurs squeaked out a 4-3 victory on their home ice. Saturday night's second game wasn't as close, as Drummondville was in control from start to finish, smoking the Sagueneens, 6-1. Ondrej Palat (2g, 2a) and Maxime Villemaire (3g) have been the brightest stars thus far for the Voltigeurs, who have received a pair of victories from Guillaume Nadeau between the pipes.
#5 Gatineau Olympiques (2) vs. #12 Rimouski Oceanic (0)
The Gatineau Olympiques also defended their home ice, taking the first two tilts of their series with the Rimouski Oceanic. Special teams were the name of the game on Friday, as the Olympiques used four power play tallies in a 6-0 win to start off the series. Saturday night's second game was significantly closer, but Gatineau came out on top once again, picking up a 3-2 overtime victory over the Oceanic. Tye McGinn's four points (2g, 2a) have played a key role in the series for the Olympiques, as one of his tallies was the overtime winner on Saturday. Francois Lacerte earned both wins in net, turning aside 48 of the 50 shots sent his way.
#6 Acadie-Bathurst Titan (0) vs. #11 Victoriaville Tigres (3)
The Victoriaville Tigres are in the midst of creating one of the biggest storylines in the first round, as they have now taken each of the first three games of their series against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The Tigres have done it with offense in all three of their wins, defeating the Titan 7-4, 5-1, and 6-3. Furthermore, Acadie-Bathurst goaltender Olivier Roy has been pulled in all three contests, allowing a total of 12 goals on 46 shots. On the other side of the ice, rookie David Honzik has gotten the job done, winning all three games in net for the Tigres. Philippe Maillet (3g, 5a) and Phillip Danault (1g, 5a) are leading the way for Victoriaville on the offensive side of things.
#7 Shawinigan Cataractes (1) vs. #10 PEI Rocket (1)
The series between Shawinigan and PEI looks like it will be one of the longer matches to take place in the first round, as the two sides appear to be evenly matched. In fact, the two sides each won once in Shawinigan, as the series will now shift to Charlottetown for the next three games. The Cataractes edged out the Rocket 2-1 in overtime in Friday's series opener, as Michael Bournival broke the 1-1 tie at the 5:10 mark of the extra session. On Saturday, PEI evened the series, earning a 4-2 victory at Centre Bionest. Andrej Nestrasil (1g, 2a) of the Rocket leads the series in scoring, while Anton Zlobin (2g) has been Shawinigan's top producer. In goal, Evan Mosher (64 saves on 68 shots) of PEI has had a slight edge on the Cataractes' Gabriel Girard (51 saves on 56 shots).
