Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs returned to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee last weekend for their final two home games of the 2010-11 regular season. Unfortunately for the MAINEiacs, they ran into the Gatineau Olympiques, who picked up a pair of high scoring victories, 6-3 and 8-5.
On Friday, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie during the first period of play. When the game reached the second period, the scoring opened up drastically, as the two sides combined for six goals. Four of the goals were scored by the Olympiques, with three of them coming in a span of 2:04. The fourth goal came 1:05 after the third, with Stefan Fournier's second goal of the night for Lewiston sandwiched in the middle. Gatineau added one more tally in the third for the 6-3 win.
On Sunday, the score was once again 1-1 after the first period, before a second straight wild middle frame. After a Lewiston goal was called off, the Olympiques scored a pair of goals, taking a 3-1 lead, which ultimately turned into 4-1. Before the end of the period, the MAINEiacs pulled within one, thanks to markers by Sam Carrier and Cameron Critchlow. In the third period, Gatineau jumped out with three straight goals, including two on the man advantage, taking a 7-3 lead. Sam Henley and Etienne Brodeur cut into the deficit with a couple of goals, but the margin was too big, and the visitors earned their second straight win in Lewiston, 8-5.
The MAINEiacs' record now stands at 38-24-1-3 (80 points), which is good for eighth place in the overall standings. Lewiston has clinched home ice advantage in the first round, and could finish as high as seventh with two wins and two Shawinigan losses in regulation. The MAINEiacs will likely face either Victoriaville or Moncton in the first round of the playoffs, with an outside chance of battling PEI.

Last Week in the Telus East Division
The Quebec Remparts (46-16-1-3, 96 pts) have pulled within two points of the Montreal Junior for second place in the overall standings. Last week, Quebec posted a 2-1 record, starting with a 5-2 win over division rival Chicoutimi on Wednesday, in a game that was shown throughout the province on RDS. On Friday night, the Remparts dropped a 5-1 decision to Victoriaville, before responding for a 4-3 win over Shawinigan on Sunday. All three games took place at Colisee Pepsi.
The Victoriaville Tigres (35-27-1-3, 74 pts) went 1-1 last week, as they remain tied for ninth place in the overall standings with the Moncton Wildcats. Victoriaville picked up a big 5-1 win at Quebec on Friday, but was unable to keep the success going on Saturday, as they fell 5-2 on home ice against Shawinigan. The Tigres and Cataractes could meet in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.
The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (27-27-5-7, 66 pts) had a tough week, as they picked up just one out of six possible points. The Sagueneens lost their first game of the week in regulation, falling to rival Quebec 5-2 on the road. Friday was the night that Chicoutimi got their lone point, coming up short 3-2 in a shootout against Val-d'Or. On Saturday, the Foreurs snagged their second road win in as many games, blanking the Sagueneens 4-0.
The Rimouski Oceanic (30-31-1-3, 64 pts) earned three out of six possible points last week, pulling within two points of Chicoutimi for 12th place overall with one game in hand. On Thursday, the Oceanic put up quite the fight against Saint John, but could not get the two points, losing 3-2 in a shootout. On Saturday, things got worse for Rimouski, who took a 6-2 defeat against Rouyn-Noranda. The Oceanic finally picked up a victory on Sunday, exacting revenge on Rouyn-Noranda in a 6-1 game.
The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (12-45-5-4, 33 pts) kept their playoff hopes alive for an extra day last week, as they edged Val-d'Or 4-3 on Wednesday. However, the Drakkar were unable to finish the week the same way they started it, as they ran into two difficult teams in Drummondville and Montreal. The Voltigeurs got the upper hand in a 3-1 score on Saturday, before the Junior blanked Baie-Comeau 7-0 on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the QMJHL
The Saint John Sea Dogs ran into a few challenges last week, but ended up winning all three games to keep their record setting hopes alive. The Sea Dogs snuck past Rimouski 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday, edged out Acadie-Bathurst 3-2 in overtime on Friday, and knocked off Cape Breton 4-1 on Sunday. The Sea Dogs and Screaming Eagles will meet in the first round in a series that could feature two teams separated by 80 points.
The Montreal Junior could have clinched the Telus West Division this weekend, but the Drummondville Voltigeurs postponed that celebration for at least a few more days. Drummondville upset the Junior 3-2 in overtime at Verdun Auditorium on Friday night.
The Moncton Wildcats copied the Victoriaville Tigres, going 1-1 this week to remain tied for ninth place with 74 points each. Moncton doubled up Cape Breton 4-2 on Friday, but were unable to sweep the weekend, falling 5-3 to PEI on Sunday. The Wildcats have one game in hand on the Tigres.
The PEI Rocket played two other games last week, defeating Halifax 4-3 in a shootout on Wednesday at the Halifax Metro Centre, before losing 4-2 to those same Mooseheads in front of their home fans at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. PEI now has 71 points on the season, keeping them within three points of both Victoriaville and Moncton.
Two other games took place in the QMJHL last week, as Shawinigan bounced Rouyn-Noranda 4-2, and Acadie-Bathurst took out Halifax 5-1.
