QMJHL Week in Review

January 31, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs returned home last weekend to start a stretch of seven of their next eight games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The first two contests in the stretch led to positive end results for the home team, who won back-to-back divisional battles against the Rimouski Oceanic and Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Both victories were comebacks, beginning on Friday night, when the MAINEiacs fell behind the Oceanic 4-1 with 5:44 remaining in the second period. Etienne Brodeur's league-leading 40th goal of the season (and 8th shorthanded) brought Lewiston within two, allowing Stefan Fournier, Michael Chaput, and Matt Bissonnette to provide the heroics in the third period comeback, as the MAINEiacs won 5-4. On Sunday, Lewiston fell behind the Sagueneens 2-0 early in the second period, before tying the score in the middle frame, and scoring three times in the third period for a 5-2 victory.

With the two wins, the MAINEiacs now have a 33-16-0-2 record (68 points), which continues to be good for second place in the Telus East Division. The overall standings are still cluttered, although Lewiston has moved up to fifth place, leading Acadie-Bathurst and Gatineau by one point, while opening up a three-point gap with Shawinigan. Drummondville is currently in fourth place, leading the MAINEiacs by three points.

Last Week in the Telus East Division

The Quebec Remparts (36-11-1-2, 75 pts) didn't have to go far last week, as they played all three of their games at Colisee Pepsi. The week started out well for the Remparts, who picked up a 5-4 comeback win over Rimouski on Wednesday, before a 4-1 win over Acadie-Bathurst on Friday. The Victoriaville Tigres had other ideas on Sunday, as they bounced Quebec 6-2.

The Victoriaville Tigres (27-20-1-3, 58 pts) split a pair of games last week, winning on the road and losing at home. The home loss took place on Friday night, when the Chicoutimi Sagueneens skated away with a 5-2 upset win. On Sunday, the Tigres earned their seventh consecutive win against the Quebec Remparts, as well as their third this season, silencing the Colisee Pepsi crowd with a 6-2 victory.

The Rimouski Oceanic (24-25-1-1, 50 pts) would have had two wins last week if games lasted 40 minutes. However, hockey is a game that features three periods, and because of that, the Oceanic were winless. Rimouski had a 4-1 lead against both Quebec and Lewiston, before finishing each game with a 5-4 regulation loss.

The Chicoutimi Sagueneens (18-22-4-6, 46 pts) produced a few surprises last week, as they earned a pair of road victories with stellar goaltending performances. Christopher Gibson's shutout gave the Sagueneens a 1-0 win in Gatineau on Thursday, before Francis Desrosiers made 44 saves in a 5-2 win in Victoriaville on Friday. Chicoutimi ran out of gas on Sunday, and the MAINEiacs capitalized for a 5-2 victory of their own.

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar (7-37-5-4, 23 pts) went to the Maritimes Division for four games in five days, and came away with nothing to show for it. The Drakkar fell 4-1 to Cape Breton on Wednesday, 2-1 to Halifax on Friday, 6-1 to Saint John on Saturday, and 5-2 to the Sea Dogs again on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL

The Montreal Junior were faced with a similar trip to Baie-Comeau, as they also ventured out to the Maritimes Division for four games in five days. The Junior alternated wins and losses on their trip, beating PEI 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday, before knocking off Cape Breton 6-1 on Sunday. Montreal's losses came to Acadie-Bathurst 3-1 on Wednesday, as well as 2-0 to Cape Breton on Saturday.

The Drummondville Voltigeurs played two games that impacted the overall standings, as they welcomed the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Shawinigan Cataractes to Centre Marcel Dionne. The Titan probably wished that they had stayed home, as the Voltigeurs blasted Acadie-Bathurst 8-1 on Saturday. Sunday's tilt was significantly closer, as the Cataractes pulled away with a 3-2 shootout win.

Shawinigan's 3-2 shootout win came a few days after they flew through the western part of the league with a pair of offensive explosions. The Cataractes blasted Rouyn-Noranda 10-2 on Wednesday, before doubling up Val-d'Or 6-3 on Thursday.

The Gatineau Olympiques had a rough week, as they lost three games to teams ranked lower than 12th in the overall standings. The Olympiques started with a 1-0 loss on home ice to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Gatineau then headed out on the road, where they fell 4-3 in overtime to Rouyn-Noranda and 4-3 in a shootout to Val-d'Or.

The Foreurs and Huskies played one head-to-head game between Shawinigan and Gatineau, with Val-d'Or coming out on top 2-1 in Rouyn-Noranda.

Three other games took place in the league last week, as Saint John beat Moncton 4-3, Moncton beat Halifax 4-3, and Halifax beat PEI 5-4 in shootout.
