QMJHL Mourns the Loss of Veteran Linesman and Supervisor Sylvain Cloutier
November 9, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Montreal, QC - It is with deep sadness that the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) learned about the passing of Sylvain Cloutier, known as "Le Clou" on November 7.
Sylvain Cloutier was a true asset to the QMJHL throughout his outstanding career. He began as a linesman, officiating 904 regular season games and 190 playoff games, totalling 1094 games over 27 seasons, from 1983 to 2010.
He was chosen to officiate in two QMJHL All-Star Games in 1989 (Verdun) and 2000 (Montreal). Cloutier also earned the opportunity to officiate in four Memorial Cup tournaments: the 1994 Memorial Cup in Laval, the 1997 edition in Hull, the 2000 tournament in Halifax, and the 2003 national championship in Quebec City.
Following his 27-season career as a linesman, the QMJHL invited him to join the ranks of its Spervisors' Committee in 2010. This role allowed Cloutier to share his vast experience and passion for officiating, serving as a mentor to all QMJHL officials.
The entire QMJHL community extends their heartfelt condolences to Sylvain Cloutier's family, including his mother Andrée Boucher-Cloutier, his wife Monique Audette, his children Audreyann and Simon-Olivier, his three beloved grandchildren, as well as his family members and friends.
