Pump Jacks Top Marshals to Take Opener 3-1 in Five Innings

May 29, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The Pump Jacks topped the Texas Marshals 3-1 after heavy rain halted their season opener after five innings on Thursday.

The East Texas Pump Jacks got the season started on the right foot Thursday night, but in the end, neither the Jacks nor the host Texas Marshals could beat Mother Nature.

The Pump Jacks defeated the Marshals 3-1 in the 2015 Texas Collegiate League season opener at Graham Field in Plano. The game was halted several pitches into the sixth inning when heavy rains fell at the Marshals' new home.

The Jacks went on the offensive immediately, scoring two quick runs in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Dilon Argo got things started with a one-out walk, and third baseman Jake Nash followed with a double into the left-center field gap. With runners on second and third and two outs, first basemen Alex Bell roped a single over into center field to put the Jacks up 2-0.

The Pump Jacks increased their lead to 3-0 the next inning when center fielder James Lear bounced into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Marshals starting pitcher Hunter Spielman had trouble finding the plate and issued three straight walks in 13 pitches, but the Pump Jacks scored just once and stranded two in the inning.

Jacks' starting pitcher Eddie Dionne cruised through three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four. Dionne threw 23 strikes against 15 balls, and got ahead of the count with a first-pitch strike on six of the twelve batters he faced. With a fresh crop of arms waiting on the bench, head coach Ernie May planned to let each pitcher throw just three innings.

Mike Crimi took over for Dionne and tossed two innings before the heavens opened up. Crimi struck out one, allowed two hits, and gave up an unearned run in the fifth inning.

The Pump Jacks will bus back to Plano for the second game of the series Friday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. You can tune into our live broadcast, or visit here when the game begins and click the GameLive box for the Pump Jacks' game to follow our live scoring app.

The Jacks will visit the Woodlands Strykers for a weekend set before a day off Monday. East Texas rounds out its season-opening six-game road trip with a pair of games at the defending champion Brazos Valley Bombers Tuesday and Wednesday.
