East Texas PumpJacks News Release
There is no longer a team in the Texas Collegiate League that has a winning record against the East Texas Pump Jacks this summer.
Strong pitching and defense made sure of that Thursday night as the Pump Jacks swept the Acadiana Cane Cutters in a twinbill, moving to 6-6 on the season series. The Jacks took 3-of-4 from the Cutters on the week, one in Lafayette on Tuesday and the two at historic Driller Park.
James Guillen and Jason Jester combined on the hill in the first game for a 4-1 win. In the nightcap, it was Jaden Dillon and Andy Steinmetz that shutdown the Cutters for a 2-1 win.
The Jacks defense was sterling as well, committing only one error in the two seven inning contests.
Guillen picked up his fourth win of the season in game one, allowing only one run on two hits in six strong innings. The USC hurler struck out five and walked two. Jester picked up his team-best eighth save, sitting down the two batters he faced with assistance from the Jacks infield in a game-ending 6-3 double play.
Ty Marlow knocked in a run on a double and scored one himself. Ryan Small picked up his second RBI in a Pump Jacks uniform. Tyler Girouard scored two runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Jake Pinchback had an RBI sacrifice fly to round out the Jacks offensive attack.
Girouard reached on a one-out double, stole third and scored on an error from the Cutters catcher to give the Jacks the 1-0 lead.
Marlow scored Seth Granger from first with his eighth double of the season in the bottom of the third. Marlow scored on an RBI single from Small and Girouard came home on the sac fly from Pinchback to give the Jacks a 4-0 lead.
The Cutters added their lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Thomas Simoneaux. Jester and the Jacks defense then ended the threat, giving the Jacks the game one win.
Game two was a pitching duel between Dillon and the Cutters' Troy Sutherland, who picked up a loss after tossing the complete six-inning game.
Dillon went five innings, giving up an unearned run while scattering four hits and striking out four in his no-decision effort. Steinmetz picked up his first win of the season with two innings of hitless work.
Hunter Dozier singled and knocked in a run on an RBI groundout. Nathan Pittman and Granger each singled and scored a run. Girouard, Marlow and Pinchback each singled as the two teams combined for only 10 hits in the nightcap.
The Pump Jacks struck first in home half of the third with Pittman scoring on a Dozier single.
Caleb Clowers scored when Ty Marlow ranged behind second base to get the hard-hit grounder and tried to make a good defensive play even better by turning, jumping and throwing. The throw, however, sailed high and allowed the Cane Cutters to tie the game at one in the top of the fifth.
With a runner at first in the top of the sixth inning, Granger made a spectacular over-the-shoulder running catch down the right field line, saving the go-ahead run from scoring.
Granger then singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and moved to second on sacrifice bunt from Marlow. The McNeese State slugger then showed off his heads-up base running, moving to third on a Girouard groundout. He scored on a wild pitch from Sutherland, giving the Jacks all they would need to complete the double-header sweep.
The Jacks welcome a day off on Friday before playing host to the Coppell Copperheads on Saturday in another double-header. Game one will start at 6:05 p.m. with game two kicking off 30 minutes after the first game wraps up.
The Pump Jacks are taking to the outdoors on Saturday with Fisherman's Paradise, presented by Plano Marine.
