Pump Jacks Season Ends in Bryan, TX

August 10, 2013 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The Pump Jacks battled to the last out, but were unable to solve the dominant pitching of Brazos Valley's Parker Ray, resulting in a season ending 6-0 loss.

It's been a rollercoaster of a season for the 2012 TCL Champs. A season filled with great moments like Matthew Dickey's stolen base record, Robert Parucha's consecutive Warstic TCL Pitcher of the week awards, and Mitch Meyer's walk-off grand slam against the Woodlands Strykers. Unfortunately the 2013 season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs as the East Texas Pump Jacks fell to the Brazos Valley Bombers 6-0 Saturday night. The Pump Jacks were held scoreless thanks to a terrific outing from Bombers starter Parker Ray. The Jacks were unable to solve the riddle of Ray, only picking up five hits on the night. Ray went the distance for the Bombers and picked up a season high 14 strikeouts.

TCL Pitcher of the Year Nick Rossetta pitched five innings and allowed five runs, all of which were unearned, on six hits and fanned one Bomber. Rossetta gave way to Jordan Price in the sixth, who pitched two innings allowing one run on five hits, with a walk and two strikeouts. Jacob Kelzer pitched a hitless eighth, allowing on batter to reach via walk.

Brazos Valley was able to able to take advantage of four Pump Jacks miscues to take a large lead and eventually the game. The Bombers opened the scoring in the second, tallying one run, broke the game open in the fifth, adding four more, before closing out the scoring with one run in the sixth.

The Pump Jacks, as they had all season long, battled to their final out, trying valiantly to keep alive their defense of the TCL crown. However, it was not to be. The Jacks' Connor Huesers singled with one out and after Meyer struck out, Joey Armstrong extended the game, and season, by working a tough walk against the dominating Ray. Mark Mathias appeared to hit a single through the whole between third and short, but Patrick McLendon made a nice stab of the hard bouncer and threw to first to end the Jacks' season.

Although the season was halted short of the Jacks' ultimate goal, the team did achieve ample success on the field. The Jacks kept their streak alive of reaching the playoffs in each year of existence and with Dickey's Co-Freshmen of the Year award; it is now the fifth year in a row a Pump Jack has taken home the honor. Rossetta's stellar season on the bump where he posted a 1.23 ERA is the best ERA in the TCL for qualified pitchers since 2010. Rossetta's two complete game shutouts during the season also were also responsible for half of the TCL's total during the 2013 summer.

The memories will carry on for all the Pump Jack faithful, but in the meantime the Jacks will close the book on the 2013 season and begin looking at the 2014 season.
