Pump Jacks Outduel Acadiana, 2-1

June 21, 2014 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

Friday night, the East Texas Pump Jacks defeated the visiting Acadiana Cane Cutters by a score of 2-1 at Historic Driller Park.

That's hardly the result that was expected after the two teams combined for 23 runs on 29 hits Thursday, a lengthy contest that featured its fair share of bad blood.

Surprisingly, it was the Pump Jacks that carried momentum forward from Thursday after putting three runs on the board in the ninth inning and threatening even more.

The Jacks opened the scoring in the home half of the first inning when Connor Huesers singled home Raymond Pedrina. Pedrina had reached when Acadiana catcher Hunter Wood dropped the third strike to lead off the game. He proceeded to steal second, his fourth-straight game with a steal since Pedrina arrived in East Texas. One out later, Andrew Grifol also reached by way of a dropped third strike which allowed Pedrina to take third. The Huesers base hit gave the Pump Jacks a 1-0 lead.

Acadiana answered quickly, scoring a run in the top of the second with a leadoff base hit, a sacrifice, and an RBI single.

East Texas mustered a run in the bottom of the third to break the tie. Anthony Gonsolin singled and took second base on an error by the right fielder. Grifol was hit by a pitch, and Gonsolin took third on a wild pitch to put runners at the corners. Huesers drove in his second run of the game with a fielder's choice, giving the Jacks a 2-1 lead.

Little did fans know at the time, that would be the final tally of a game that turned into a pitcher's duel. Jeremy Hallonquist and Acadiana hurler Jake Winston took over the game, and the bullpens cooperated to keep the contest scoreless the rest of the way.

Hallonquist pitched into the seventh, going 6.2 innings and allowing five hits and just the one run. He struck out six and didn't allow a walk. Robbie Petty came on to strand a runner in scoring position in the seventh. He struck out three in 1.1 innings of work. Kyle Garvin registered a strikeout in a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save.

Neither the Pump Jacks nor the Cane Cutters allowed a walk on the evening. It was the first Pump Jacks game this season in which there were no bases on balls for either team. After 29 hits the night before, the two teams managed just nine hits combined on Friday.

The lack of walks aside, the game may have seemed eerily familiar to Pump Jacks fans. Exactly one week earlier, one June 13, Acadiana visited Driller Park to face Hallonquist. The Hallsville native pitched a solid game and the Jacks went on to win by an identical 2-1 score as this week's contest.

Gonsolin, Grifol, and Huesers picked up the only hits on the evening for the Pump Jacks. Huesers drove in both East Texas runs.

The Jacks continued their four-game homestand Saturday night when they welcome the Woodlands Strykers for a two-game set.

Saturday marks the return of a fan favorite, Aflac Night, when Grandstand tickets are free! All general admission tickets will be free on the day of the game, or fans can visit their favorite Aflac representative for vouchers to pick up their tickets early. Fans can even upgrade to box seats for as little as one dollar!

Aflac Night is more than free tickets, though. For instance, representatives will be giving out Aflac mini talking ducks throughout the evening! Aflac will also hold a raffle during the game, with proceeds benefitting charity.

The Jacks wrap up the weekend on Sunday with Family Night presented by the Longview News-Journal. Fans can pick up four Grandstand tickets for just $10, or add four meals for only $15 more.
