Pump Jacks Announce Home Run Derby Participants, Schedule, and Other Details
July 8, 2013 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release
In the next 30 hours, players, coaches, scouts, administrators, and fans will descend upon historic Driller Park for the 2013 Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game.
The Pump Jacks have been hard at work preparing for the event, and today the team announced details about the event and an itinerary for the evening.
Among the most eagerly-anticipated details are the participants in the 2013 TCL All-Star Home Run Derby. The derby will include the following participants, one from each team:
Brett Kauten, Brazos Valley Bombers - Kauten is batting .314 with two homers and 25 RBI. David Paiz Jr., Victoria Generals - The Texas State outfielder has two homers to lead the Generals. Chabrielle Pizzarro, Texas Marshals - The Marshals' slugging catcher is hitting .331 with three homers. Kevin Santana, Woodlands Strykers - Santana leads the league with five home runs Logan Taylor, Acadiana Cane Cutters - The reigning Warstic TCL Player of the Week hit three homers last week alone.
Rounding out the field for the derby is outfielder Mitch Meyer from the Pump Jacks. The Kansas State product has his three home runs on the season, which is more impressive considering he arrived in East Texas 20 games into the season. The Week Five winner of the Warstic TCL Player of the Week award is hitting a home run every 14.7 at-bats, the highest frequency in the TCL this season.
The home run derby will begin at 6:00 p.m. and it will consist of two rounds. All six participants will receive ten outs in the first round; any swing that doesn't result in a home run will be called an out. The three players with the highest home run totals will advance to the championship round. Once again, all players in the final will have ten outs to hit as many home runs as possible. The winner will be the player with the most home runs in the championship round. Should there be a tie in either round, a five-out tiebreaker will be used.
To give fans a chance to get settled at historic Driller Park before the TCL All-Star Home Run Derby, the gates will open early at 5:30 p.m. But the derby is just the beginning of the festivities Tuesday night.
All-Star Autograph Session: All-star players and coaches from both squads will be available for signatures and photographs during the autograph session, which will follow the home run derby. The East players will sit by the first base dugout, while the West players will be camped on the picnic deck. The Pump Jacks will have all-star souvenir programs, special all-star autograph cards, and even all-star logo baseballs for fans to pick up and get their favorite players to sign.
All-Star Memorabilia Auction: The All-Star Memorabilia auction will have one-of-a-kind items for sale to commemorate the 2013 TCL All-Star Game. Bats and balls signed by the East and West all-star teams, will be available, along with special items like the home run derby-winning bat signed by the winner, and the first pitch of the game signed by the pitcher, catcher, and batter. Fans will also be able to bid on a logo baseball signed just by the all-stars from their favorite team.
All proceeds from the All-Star Memorabilia Auction will benefit the Haddock Foundation, which fosters national and international sports competition.
2013 TCL All-Star Game: Player introductions will begin at about 6:50 p.m., with first pitch for the TCL's midsummer classic scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The East squad - made up of players from the Cane Cutters, Strykers, and host Pump Jacks - will do battle with the West, comprised of representatives of the Bombers, Generals, and Marshals. Rosters were made up according to a poll of league coaches to present not just the best players in the TCL this season, but players with the best pro potential.
Eight Pump Jacks have been selected to participate in the game, including six who will start: brothers Brooks and Ty Marlow at second base and designated hitter, respectively; third baseman Joey Armstrong; outfielders Matthew Dickey and Garrett McMullen; and pitcher Austin Watson.
Nick Rossetta and Jordan Johnson will come out of the bullpen for the East all-stars.
Webcast & Stats: For fans unable to make it to Driller Park for the festivities, the Pump Jacks will offer both a live webcast and live stats for the event. As always, Jake Donnelly will have the call on the webcast, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with the Home Run Derby. To catch the webcast, visit the Pump Jacks website at www.pumpjacksbaseball.com/nation/radio/.
To follow live stats of the game beginning at 7:05 p.m., visit bit.ly/12SEXx4.
The game will be a standard nine-inning affair. Following the contest, the TCL All-Star Game MVP will be named after a poll of league representatives.
Last year's TCL All-Star Game, a battle of North versus South, was won by the South, 10-2. Jude Vidrine of the host Generals smashed two home runs to earn All-Star MVP honors.
Tickets for the TCL All-Star Game can be purchased online at pumpjacksbaseball.com, in person at the Pump Jacks office at 106 North Kilgore Street, #201, in downtown Kilgore, by phone at (903) 218-4638 , or at the ticket office at Driller Park the night of the game.
