Pulaski Mariners News Release
The Pulaski Mariners (26-20) fell to the Greeneville Astros (25-22) on Thursday night. The contest was a pitchers' duel for most of the night until the Astros broke free with three in the eighth.
Troy Scott (2-2, 2.65 ERA) returned to the mound for the first time since July 19th. Scott was one pitch away from a nearly flawless outing, but a mistake offering to Jacob Nottingham resulted in a long home run to center field in the second inning.
Scott worked four innings of one-run ball. He surrendered four hits, walked two Astros, and struck out three.
"I was very pleased with Scott's outing" manager Rob Mummau said. "He threw strikes and attacked the zone, but his slider wasn't as sharp as it was before."
The Mariners drew even in the bottom of the fifth inning against Greeneville starter Austin Nicely (2-5, 3.19 ERA). Carlton Tanabe opened the inning with a wall-ball double to center. Tanabe then advanced to third on a groundout by Brett Thomas. Another groundout, this one coming off the bat of Wayne Taylor, pushed Tanabe across the plate.
Luis Pina (1-2, 4.59 ERA) entered the game in relief of Scott in the fifth inning. Pina pitched one-two-three innings in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but ran out of steam in the eighth inning. Greeneville got to Pina for three runs-two coming by way of a triple by Hector Roa. Roa when then steal home for the final run of the game.
"Pina got a little tired and started missing out of the zone on his arm side" said Mummau. "He had two walks in that inning, and that's what eventually did him in."
Pulaski went quietly in the bottom of the ninth to give the Astros the victory in game one of the series.
The two teams play again tomorrow night at Calfee Park. First pitch is set for 7pm.
