August 30, 2004 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release
PulaskiâThe Blue Jays ended their 2004 season by taming one of the best teams in the Appalachian League, the Greeneville Astros, in a 10-0 shutout Monday night. The Blue Jay offense sent the 972 home crowd fans cheering throughout the game with ten hits, two of which were home runs. Adding to the excitement, the Blue Jay's pitching was unshakable, allowing only four hits in the entire game at Historic Calfee Park.
Every player on the Blue Jays contributed at the plate for the win; each batter either reached base to score or drove a run home. Most notably, third baseman Anthony Garibaldi, 2-for-4 on the night with four RBI and two runs scored, scorched a three run homer in the bottom of the sixth. The second homer of the night came in the seventh off the bat of pinch hitter Jon Ashfordâ1-for-3 on the night with two RBI and one run scored. The high-flying shot plummeted from the sky over the right-centerfield wall to set in motion a standing ovation from the crowd.
In Monday night's game, Pulaski's pitching staff was arguably more effective than any other game this season. Starter Chi Hung Cheng (4-1) pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing only three hits, one walk, and striking out a stunning eight batters. The following three relievers allowed only one hit combined and struck out another seven.
The final game of the 2004 season went as smoothly as could have been planned for the Pulaski Blue Jays. While they didn't quite squeeze out a division crown, they proved that not only could they beat the best team in the Appalachian League, but also that they had the muscle to shut them down and the firepower to score big.
