Austin Bruins News Release

After dominating a five-minute penalty kill in overtime, the #1 Austin Bruins (44-20-2) received a dose of its own medicine, losing in heartbreaking fashion 2-1 to the #3 Bismarck Bobcats (35-25-5) Saturday night at Riverside Arena in Austin.

Seven combined goals were scored in the first period of Game 1. Only one shot found the back of the net in the opening period of Game 2. The Bruins took the 1-0 lead at 4:22, when Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) forced Bobcats goalie Aaron Nelson (Bismarck, ND) to come out of his crease to challenge. Kohls skated around behind Nelson and fed a pass into the slot that Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) fired home for his 53rd career goal. The goal moved Dickman past John Simonson for the Bruins all-time record. Austin took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission behind seven saves from Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN).

The Bruins controlled the play in the second period, outshooting the Bobcats 11-4, but after a scoreless period, the game remained 1-0. Bismarck tied the game at the tail end of a power-play at 9:48 of the third period, when Huba Sekesi (Munich, Germany) slid a puck past a sprawling Lehr.

For the second night in a row (third game in a row for Austin), overtime was needed to determine a winner. In the extra frame, the Bruins were issued a five-minute major penalty, giving Bismarck a lengthy power-play. During the penalty kill, Austin garnered four or five great scoring chances, but couldn t get the game-winner past Nelson. Right after the Bobcats long power-play ended, Stanislav Dzakhov (Moscow, Russia) fired a puck from the right circle through a screen past Lehr on the short side at 6:26 of overtime to win it. Nelson stopped 33 Bruins shots in the win, while Lehr saved 20 Bobcats shots in the loss.

Next weekend the series shifts to Bismarck, where Games 3 and 4 will be played at the VFW Center Friday and Saturday night. Both games will start at 8pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com and heard on 1480AM KAUS in Austin. If after next weekend, the series is tied 2-2, a fifth game would be played at Riverside Arena Monday night, April 28.
