Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Three power play goals Friday helped the Waterloo Black Hawks snap a four-game winless streak with a 4-3 victory in front of 3,500 fans at Young Arena against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

A faceoff win and quick opportunity yielded the only goal in the first period, Waterloo's only even-strength tally in the contest. At 6:16, a wraparound chance by Tim Lappin left a loose puck in the crease, knocked into the net by Pijus Rulevicius.

The Black Hawks converted a five-on-three power play just 1:47 into the second period, as Ian McCoshen's long shot eluded Arthur Brey. The chance did not come at top speed, and slipped by the netminder. Dubuque delivered a power play goal of their own at 7:25, with Matt Benning's shot from the left point finding the net through traffic.

Just 4:28 into the third, the Saints tied the count when Shane Sooth missed the net, but the puck returned off the end boards to Peter Quenneville, who scored from a sharp angle. However, the Hawks went back in front by converting the second two-man advantage of the affair at 8:02 on a back-and-forth play in front of the net, set up Justin Kloos for Zach Stepan.

Not quite three minutes later, Dubuque drew even again, capitalizing for a power play goal when Mike Downing snuck to the bottom of the left wing circle and took a cross-ice feed from John Stevens, banging the disk past Cal Petersen. Ultimately though, good fortune on the special teams returned its favor to the Black Hawks. With 6:15 remaining and the Hawks circling on their fifth power play of the game, J.T. Stenglein banked a shot from behind the net off of a Saint and across the goal line for the winner.

Petersen made 37 saves in the victory, while his counterpart Brey turned in 30. Waterloo finished the night three-for-six in power play situations, while Dubuque was two-for-eight.

After Friday's brief stop at home, the Black Hawks are back on the road Saturday for a tilt with the Lincoln Stars. Currently third in the USHL Western Conference, the Hawks lead the fifth place Stars by only three points. The next Waterloo home game at Young Arena will be Thursday versus the Tri-City Storm.
