Potent Eddies Offence Derails 'Hawks at Clarke Field

EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton (4W-3D-2L) secured their fourth win of the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season Aug. 16, with a 3-0 result over Carolina RailHawks (2W-2D-4L) in a match presented by World Health at Clarke Field.

Eddies striker Tomi Ameobi and midfielder Lance Laing both scored their seventh goals of the season and Salvadorian midfielder Dustin Corea scored his first goal since arriving in Edmonton. Between the woodwork, goalkeeper Matt VanOekel collected his fourth clean sheet of the Fall Season.

Corea started the match on the front foot, sending Laing past the RailHawks defense on eight minutes, but the Jamaican's attempt went straight towards goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald. Moments later, midfielder Ritchie Jones received a cross from striker Daryl Fordyce but his volley rebounded off the crossbar.

Ameobi continued his hot streak and gave the Eddies the 1-0 lead on 12 minutes. Corea sent Ameobi into the box with a perfectly timed assist through the RailHawks defense and Ameobi cleanly placed the ball past Fitzgerald.

The Eddies increased their lead on 27 minutes when midfielder Thiago de Freitas collected the ball outside the Eddies' area and sent Laing on a counter attack. Laing travelled all the way to the Carolina area and slotted his shot in the bottom corner for the 2-0.

The home side continued their dominance on 36 minutes to make it 3-0. Fordyce found Corea inside the area where he beat his defender before slotting it past the Carolina 'keeper.

The Eddies would head into the dressing room with the 3-0 lead.

FC Edmonton continued their dominance to open the second half. Immediately following a Daryl Fordyce volley attempt on net, Jones had a one-on-one that the Fitzgerald was also able to save.

Former Eddies midfielder Neil Hlavaty had Carolina's best chance of the match on 67 minutes when he forced VanOekel to make a save off a well-taken free kick.

A final Eddies attempt on 71 minutes was once again stopped by Fitzgerald, as the Eddies registered their fourth win of the Fall Season to move into second place behind Ottawa Fury FC and fifth overall in the Combined Standings.

"The balance and the shape of the team was good," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "I'm very, very pleased with today's work. We had terrific attacking play in the first half. I'm delighted, we've won 3-0 at home and haven't given any goals away."
