Stockton Lightning News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Each time you go to the ballpark, you have the opportunity to see something you might have never seen before. On Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark, the Stockton Ports scored more runs than have ever been scored in the three year history of the field as they beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final of 21-7. The record for most runs scored at Banner Island Ballpark had previously been held by the Visalia Oaks, who plated 20 runs on 26 hits on June 22, 2006.
Stockton's offensive barrage began in the bottom of the third against Quakes starter David Herndon (0-2). In a scoreless game, Mike Affronti led off with a single, and two batters later, Matt Sulentc singled to center to put two on with one out. Archie Gilbert followed with an infield single to load the bases, and Darryl Lawhorn knocked in the first run with an RBI single. Sean Doolittle followed with a sac fly to left to make it 2-0, and then Chris Carter hit the first of his three home runs to left to give the Ports a 5-0 edge.
The Quakes fired back with two runs in the top of the fourth against Ports starter Graham Godfrey, who started in place of Henry Rodriguez due to his promotion to AA-Midland on Friday. Godfrey retired the first 10 batters he faced, but then allowed four straight singles in the fourth and was taken from the game and received a no-decision, allowing just the two runs (one earned) while striking out five. He was replaced by Jason Glushon (1-0), who had just joined the team from Sacramento. Glushon struck out his first two batters to end the fourth. He eventually earned the win, going 3.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking out four.
Leading 5-2, Stockton's offense burst on the scene once again in the fifth. With Herndon still on the mound, Lawhorn, Doolittle, and Carter hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to start the inning. Following a double from Jed Morris, Herndon was lifted from the game, and went on to take the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in four-plus innings of work. Stockton added two more runs in the inning on RBI singles from Larry Cobb and Sulentic to make it 10-2.
In the sixth, the Ports teed off on Rancho relievers Bobby Cassevah and Jared Incinelli. Cassevah started the inning, and yielded three straight walks to load the bases. He was relieved by Incinelli, who came in with the bases loaded and nobody out. Jermaine Mitchell grounded into a fielder's choice to score the run that made it 11-3. Affronti then worked a walk to re-load the bases, and Cobb followed with an RBI single to make it 12-3. Sulentic worked a bases-loaded walk, and Gilbert hit a sac-fly to center, bringing the score to 14-3. Frank Martinez, who came in as a pinch-hitter for Lawhorn the inning before, knocked an RBI single to right. Doolittle walked to load the bases yet again, and Carter worked a bases loaded walk to make it 16-3. Morris and Mitchell followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 19-3. In all, the Ports sent 14 men to the plate in the sixth, walked seven times and had four hits.
Stockton poured it on in the eighth. The Quakes sent their third baseman Larry Infante to the mound to pitch. Immediately, Doolittle and Carter hit back-to-back home runs, making it 21-3. It was Doolittle's second, and Carter's third home run of the night. In all, the Ports had six home runs--three from Carter, two from Doolittle, and one from Lawhorn.
Each member of the Ports offense--including Martinez who came into the game in the fifth--scored at least once. Carter crossed the plate five times and finished 3-for-4 with three homers and six RBI. Doolittle scored four times and went 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI.
Rancho scored four runs in the top of the ninth, but James Heuser eventually closed the door, striking out five in his two innings despite allowing four runs.
The Ports will go for a four-game sweep of the Quakes when they take the field on Sunday at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Brett Anderson will be on the hill for the Ports (2-1, 3.77 ERA), opposed by Trevor Bell (1-0, 3.45 ERA) for the Quakes. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. PST.
