Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, August 2, 2006 - Portland LumberJax Head Coach/GM Derek Keenan officially signed Jed Prossner for the 2007 season today. The two-time All-American stand-out from Easton, Md. led the way for the University of North Carolina during the 2002-2005 seasons.

"We picked Jed in the 2005 Entry Draft as a result of a high recommendation from Brodie [Merrill]," Keenan explained. "I was very reluctant to release him at the roster deadline date and thought for sure he'd be picked up by another team. Fortunately for Portland he was not signed, making him an unrestricted free agent for this season."

Prossner didn't compete in the 2005-2006 season for the NLL, but instead spent the past two summers playing for the MLL's Philadelphia Barrage for which he was the second-overall pick. According to Keenan, however, Prossner showed last year at training camp that he will adapt quickly to the indoor game here in Portland.

"He is a rare commodity today. This kid can just flat out play the game of lacrosse," Keenan added. "He's a big, strong man with quick feet and a great shot. We're delighted and fortunate to have him."

In 2005, he received the Patterson Medal which is given annually to UNC's most outstanding male or female senior athlete. He became the first lacrosse player to receive this prestigious medal. He also was a finalist for the Tewaartaton Trophy as national player of the year in 2004. Jax teammate Merrill was a finalist for this award as well.

The attackman started every game during his college years, finishing his career ranked second on the school's all-time goals list with 113 and is tied for seventh-place in UNC history for 172 points (113 goals and 59 assists). Throughout his final season alone, he captured 29 goals and 15 assists for 44 points. He was also named Carolina's Most Valuable Player in 2004 and 2005.
