Portland Continues to Build Roster, Adds Three More Free Agents

PORTLAND, OR - Portland's Arena Football franchise added three more free agents Thursday, as the team announced the acquisitions of wide receiver James Kirkendoll, defensive end Ryan Smith, and defensive back Brian Smith.

Kirkendoll (5-10, 185, Texas) signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad. The fleet-footed wideout hauled in 121 passes for 1,389 yards and nine touchdowns during his four-year collegiate career at the University of Texas. As a senior in 2010, Kirkendoll was the co-recipient of the Longhorns' Darrell K Royal Most Valuable Offensive Player Award.

"James possesses rare speed and has the ability to take the top off of a defense," said Head Coach Matthew Sauk. "He's difficult to defend one-on-one and can do some special things with the ball in his hands. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he brings to this offense."

Ryan Smith (6-3, 265, Abilene Christian) enjoyed a stellar collegiate career at Abilene Christian University. Over four seasons, the standout defensive end recorded 124 tackles with 12.5 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. As a senior in 2012, Smith posted 51 total tackles, including five sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss.

"Ryan is a natural pass rusher that plays with a high motor. When you turn on the tape, you see a guy that is constantly hustling to the football. His relentless nature is the kind of attitude we hope to instill in our entire defense."

Brian Smith (5-11, 180, Virginia Union) had a knack for separating wide receivers from the football during his collegiate career at Virginia Union University. As a senior in 2012, Smith ranked among the nation's leaders with 12 pass breakups. In four seasons as a starter, he delivered 166 tackles with six interceptions, 25 pass breakups, four blocked kicks and two forced fumbles. Smith attended rookie minicamp with the New York Jets in 2013.

"One of our goals was to add an element of speed to our roster and Brian certainly fits that mold. He plays fast and aggressive and excels in man coverage. With his combination of size and athleticism, Brian is capable of making an immediate impact in our secondary."
