Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, October 23, 2008 - The Portland LumberJax have signed forward Matt Brown, rookie defenseman Dayne Michaud and forward Trent Smalley to one-year contracts, Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan announced today.
A three-year National Lacrosse League veteran, Brown spent the 2008 season with the Colorado Mammoth after previously playing with the Arizona Sting. In only three games last season, Brown scored three goals and added three assists while also serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, University of Denver.
Brown was acquired by Portland on September 15th from the Edmonton Rush in exchange for forward Spencer Martin.
"Given the opportunity, Matt will score regularly for us," said Keenan. "He can shoot the ball from the perimeter and is very strong taking it to the net."
From Seton Hill University, Michaud played for the Port Coquitlam Saints of Canada's Junior A System. In 21 games this season for the Saints, Michaud scored seven goals and added 15 assists.
"Dayne is a big, strong kid with good speed and strength," said Keenan. "He is a stay at home type defender, which is an area we have a need in. He will be given a great opportunity to crack our roster."
Smalley is a two-year NLL veteran who last played with the Edmonton Rush in 2006, appearing in 10 games and scoring six points (5 goals, 1 assist). The Ladner, British Columbia native also plays for the Coquitlam Adanacs in the Western Lacrosse Association. He scored 18 goals and added 23 assists during the 2008 regular season.
"Trent is one of about three right-handed offensive guys who will come in and battle for the open spot on the right side," said Keenan. "He can really shoot the ball from the outside, but he needs to come in and make an impression right away."
