April 2, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release

ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Thursday that Port Huron Icehawks head coach Stan Drulia has been named the 2008-09 IHL Coach of the Year as selected by league head coaches and general managers.

Behind the bench for the second season as a member of the Icehawks, Drulia has once again put together a tough, hard working roster which currently sits in second place, just five points behind first place Fort Wayne, with six games remaining on the regular season. Through his leadership, he guided the first year franchise to the Turner Cup Finals last season where they were eventually defeated in triple overtime in game seven. The 41-year-old native of Fort Erie, Ontario began his coaching career with the Orlando Seals of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League back in 2002, where he captured the league championship. From 2003-2006 he went on to coach the Augusta Lynx and Toledo Storm in the East Coast Hockey League. He became the head coach of the Port Huron Flags beginning the 2006-07 season.

Before beginning his coaching career, Drulia played professionally for 13 years from 1989 to 2001, including eight seasons in the old IHL. He played 496 games in the old IHL, tallying 248 goals and 319 assists for 567points. Drulia also skated in the National Hockey League (NHL), suiting up for the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 1992-93 season and again from 1999-2001. With the Lightning, he scored 15 goals and dished out 27 assists.

Drulia will be presented with the award on Saturday, April 4th.
