Pookie Jones Attempts to Resurrect Football Career

Louisville Fire Head Coach Wally English announced today that the arenafootball2 league has assigned former University of Kentucky quarterback Pookie Jones to the Louisville Fire.

Pookie led UK to the 1993 Peach Bowl along with Fire receiver Alfonso Browning. Following the Peach Bowl Pookie left Kentucky early to pursue a professional baseball career. While at UK, from 1991-1993, Pookie became 4th all-time in total offense and 7th all-time in passing yards. Jones is also a former Kentucky Mr. Football in 1989 at Calloway County High School.

"We are very excited about adding a player with Pookie's ability and leadership. As a veteran, he should be a great influence in the locker room and huddle, said Fire General Manager Dave Arnold.

Pookie will try to resurrect his football career with the Fire. After being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 1994, Jones played three seasons in the minor's making it to High A in 1996. Pookie then played football again briefly with Vancouver in the Canadian Football League before retiring from sports. Pookie is the first quarterback the Fire has signed for the 2003 season under new Head Coach Wally English.

Pookie and Coach English will be available for one-on-one interviews and photos today from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on the Fire turf in Broadbent Arena.

The Fire will open the 2003 season on Saturday March 29th against the Cincinnati Swarm at 7:30pm in Freedom Hall. Season tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling 368-0009.
