Play-Off Hunt Continues: Maulers Travel to Greensboro
June 15, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release
(MONTGOMERY, AL) The Montgomery Maulers are looking to continue their winning ways this weekend when they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on the Revolution (3-7). The Maulers defeated the Revolution, 45-37, in the two teams first meeting on May 6, in Montgomery. The Maulers have won four of their last five games; the lone loss coming on May 20, when the Maulers were defeated by the Cincinnati Marshals, 47-46, in overtime.
The Maulers (5-6) are coming off a 42-30 win over the Charleston SandSharks (5-5) on Monday night. With a win this weekend, the Maulers would reach the .500 mark and more importantly move one game closer to catching the SandSharks and earning the final play-off spot in the Atlantic Conference of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). The Maulers currently trail the SandSharks by a half game. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on July 1, in Charleston, SC.
The Maulers/Revolution May 6, match-up was the Maulers first game under new ownership and Maulers Head Coach Michael Mink said that the team has really developed since that game. "I think that we are definitely more of a unit now," said Mink. "We have been together a little over a month and it's obvious that positive progress has been made. The guys know what to expect from us as the coaches and what to expect from each other...That game was a learning experience...I think we had only had two practices together before that game.
Mink and Co-Owner/General Manager John Morris, purchased the franchise just three days prior to the game.
In the two teams first meeting, receiver Shaun Holmes ( Alabama State University) led the Maulers offensive front scoring a season-high three touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown with 7:10 remaining in regulation.
The Revolution is coming off a 58-44 loss to the Fayetteville Guard on June 10.
Mauler players to watch: Quarterback J.R. Richardson ( Alabama State University) and wide receiver Machion Sanders ( Alabama State University). Richardson threw three touchdown passes and had 210 passing yards in Monday's 42-37 win over Charleston. Richardson is currently tied for second in the NIFL in pass completion (58.5) and fourth in the league averaging just under 150 passing yards per game. Sanders is coming off a two-touchdown night on Monday. He had 108 receiving yards in Monday's win and is currently sixth in the NIFL averaging 63.2 receptions per game.
This Saturday's game is set for a 7:30 PM kick-off time at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro. The Maulers will travel to Fayetteville next Saturday to take on the Fayetteville Guard and then close out the regular season in Charleston on July 1.
