Pitching Lifts Tides over Knights

April 12, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Chris Tillman and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout, pitching the Tides to a 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights Thursday night at Harbor Park.

Tillman (1-1) was sharp in his second outing of the year, as he surrendered just three hits in 5.2 innings of work. The 23-year-old walked two and struck out eight, throwing 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes.

The only trouble Tillman ran into was in the sixth, as he yielded a double, a walk and a hit by pitch before departing with the bases loaded and two out. Newcomer Miguel Gonzalez escaped the threat, as he retired Josh Phegley on a lineout on a 3-1 pitch to keep the Knights off the board.

Gonzalez was impressive in his Tides debut, as he retired each of the seven batters he faced, including three strikeouts.

The Knights strung together one final rally in the ninth inning, as Dan Johnson worked a one-out walk from Kyler Newby before being pinch-run for by Ray Olmedo. After a two-out single by Jordan Danks moved Olmedo to third, Newby induced a popout by Greg Golson to close the contest and register a save in his Tides' debut.

The Tides got the only run they would need in the first inning, as Xavier Avery led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field and came around to score on a groundout by Steve Tolleson.

The run was the only damage against Dylan Axelrod (1-1), who suffered the tough-luck loss after allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out five.

Jai Miller doubled and tripled for Norfolk, and is now batting .320 with five extra-base hits in seven games this season.

The two clubs will square off again Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:15. Dana Eveland (1-0, 1.50) will make his Harbor Park debut against Charlotte southpaw Charlie Leesman (0-1, 10.38).
