Portland Pirates News Release


The Pirates solidified second place in the Atlantic Division in the final weekend of the 2009-2010 AHL Regular Season to set up a first round playoff series against the Manchester Monarchs. Portland posted a 1-2-0-0 record to close out the campaign and finished the Regular Season with a 45-24-7-4 record. Weekend opening losses to Manchester (4-3 on Friday) and Lowell (5-2 on Saturday) were followed by a season finale 5-2 victory over the Worcester Sharks on Sunday.

Alec Martinez scored the game winner on a power play midway through the third period as the Monarchs shaded the Pirates 4-3 Friday at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Marc-Andre Gragnani, Paul Byron and Brad Larsen scored for the Pirates, who saw their 11-game point streak (8-0-2-1) come to an end with the loss.

Ben Walter collected a goal and an assist to lead Lowell to a 5-2 win over the Pirates Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Cody McCormick and Gragnani scored for the Pirates, who, despite the loss, clinched second in the Atlantic Division as a result of Manchester's 2-0 loss to Bridgeport.

Mark Mancari and McCormick each collected a goal and an assist to lead the Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Worcester Sharks at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday. Philip Gogulla, Felix Schutz and Byron also scored for the Pirates while Brad Larsen collected two assists.

This Week:

The Pirates head into the post season and a first round match up against the Manchester Monarchs. The first two games of the best-of-seven series will be played Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Friday, April 16th and Saturday, April 17th (Cumberland County Civic Center), 7 p.m.

Manchester finished the regular season with a 43-28-3-6 record, good enough for third in the Atlantic Division.

The Pirates posted a 7-2-1-0 record against the Monarchs this season. Six of the 10 games between the two teams were decided by one goal, three of which ended in a shootout. All three shootout games were won by the Pirates.

Mark Mancari was the highest scorer in the season series with four goals and seven assists for 11 points in eight games. Five of Brad Larsen's 13 goals came against the Monarchs.

Bud Holloway led the Monarchs in scoring against the Pirates with three goals and three assists for six points in 10 games.
