Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates announced today that goalie Maxime Ouellet, defenseman Matt Libby and center Brad Parsons will serve as instructors for the Pirates Hockey School to be held at Portland Ice Arena from July 14 - 18. The public is invited to attend each session.
"We're very pleased that three of our players could be a part of the hockey school," said Pirates' head coach Tim Army, who is also directing the Pirates' Hockey School. "The young players coming into the school will have a chance to meet and learn from three exceptional professionals. All three have come up through the ranks beginning as youth hockey players, and I think they'll be able to offer camp participants some valuable instruction on improving their games.
"We're very excited by the week ahead," Army added. "We've been able fill all the available spots in the camp, and I think the 100 players we have coming in will have an enjoyable week." Libby will work at the camp on Monday and Tuesday, July 14th and 15th. Parsons will work on Wednesday, July 16th. Ouellet joins the staff on Thursday, July 17th, and Parsons returns on July 18th.
Ouellet set four franchise goaltending records during the 2002-2003 season including most shutouts (7), longest shutout streak (193:42), most saves in a period (29) and best save percentage (.929). The native of Beauport, Quebec started for the Canadian AHL All-Stars in the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic. He was later named an AHL Second Team All-Star.
Libby became the first Maine native to play for the Pirates since their inaugural season. The pride of Saco had 12 assists in 44 games in a season cut short by injury. Parsons led all Pirates in games played last year with 75. The rookie out of Kingston, Massachusetts and Princeton University had 18 points. Two of his four goals were game-winners.
They are just three of the instructors who will join Army during the weeklong session. Among the other instructors are Pirates' assistant coach Mark Kumpel, Pirates' Strength and Conditioning coach Dana White, Casco Bay Youth Hockey Coach John Hart, Chesapeake Bay Youth Hockey (MD) coach Ron Campbell, Dorothy Diggs of the University of Southern Maine Women's Hockey coaching staff, Luke Manson, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, Hillary Ensor, AT, C., a former goalie for the University of New Hampshire and several members of the Portland Junior Pirates.
The Pirates' Hockey School will be a five-day session with three hours of on-ice instruction each day. The focus of the instruction will be on skating, puck handling, passing and shooting. The Pirates' Hockey School will also include off-ice instruction covering dynamic stretching, conditioning and agility training. Each participant will receive a personal written evaluation and a Portland Pirates Hockey School jersey.
The mission of the Portland Pirates' Hockey School is to provide top quality instruction in a supportive learning environment to assist players at all levels to meet and exceed their ice hockey playing goals with an emphasis on individual skill development.
