Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers started their 5th year anniversary season with a big win at the Wachovia Arena against the Louisville Fire.
Head Coach Rich Ingold and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers extinguished the Fire 45-37 in front of a roaring crowd of over 5,000 fans. The first and only score in the first quarter was a 25 yard field goal kicked by Pioneers David Davis.
After a slow start the second quarter brought more action to the game with Louisville's Cesare Manning catching a 35 yard pass starting the Fire with a 7-3 lead. The Pioneers Joe Hollister scored a touchdown giving the Pioneers another three point advantage. The Louisville Fire's Rob Mager caught a 24 yard pass from the Fire's QB Brett Dietz making the score 13-10 Louisville. The Pioneers Danny Thomas ended the second quarter with a 17-13 Pioneers lead by catching a 12 yard pass by Pioneers QB Mike Granieri.
The third quarter brought the Fire's Mager with another touchdown to bring Louisville back in the lead 20-17. The Pioneers Yardon Brantley caught an 8 yard pass from Pioneers Granieri giving the Pioneers a 24-20 lead. Louisville's Dwayne Lefall added another touchdown allowing the Pioneers to lead. Pioneers Danny Thomas ended the third quarter with a 6 yard pass advancing the Pioneers 31-23.
In the final quarter, Louisville's Anthony Payton catch a 3 yard touchdown pass making the score 30-31 Pioneers still in the lead. Pioneers JR Thomas catch a 22 yard pass keeping the Pioneers still in the lead with 38-30. Lawrenc Taylor from Louisville caught a 36 yard pass putting Louisville at 37-38. JR Thomas secured the Pioneers victory with a 23 yard pass with only 39 sec. left in the game.
The game honors were Rob Mager, Louisville for Offensive, Joe Hollister, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for Defense and Yaacov Yisrael, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for Ironman and Game MVP.
