June 7, 2022 - Pioneer League (PL) News Release
The Pioneer Baseball League presented by TicketSmarter today announced the "PBL Players of the Week" for Week 2. A pitcher and position player are selected each week from both the North and South Divisions of the league. Week 2's selections are highlighted below:
North Division:
Montana Quigley - Pitcher, Great Falls Voyagers: After starting out strong in the season's opening week, Montana Quigley continued to impress while serving as the closer for the first- place Voyagers. The 17th overall pick in this year's PBL Draft picked up two more saves in three appearances, allowing no runs with three hits, racking up three strikeouts and walking nobody. Quigley leads the league with three saves and Great Falls has won all five games that he's appeared in.
Calvin Estrada - Outfielder, Idaho Falls Chukars: Calvin Estrada tore the cover off the ball in the second week of the PBL season, helping Idaho Falls win five of six against the Grand Junction Rockies. The 25-year-old outfielder went a scalding 16-for-33 with three homers and seven doubles while scoring nine runs and driving in 13. Estrada also stole three bases and struck out just four times. He now leads the league in extra-base hits and ranks fourth in batting average, second in RBIs, and is tied for third in home runs.
South Division:
Preston Snavely - Pitcher, Northern Colorado Owlz: The Owlz racked up their first five wins in team history against the Rocky Mountain Vibes this week, and Preston Snavely contributed to that with a strong start on Saturday. The 23-year-old tossed six innings and gave up just one earned run and five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Snavely will carry a 3.27 ERA into his next start against the Raptors this week.
Nico Popa - Outfielder, Grand Junction Rockies: Grand Junction may have lost five of six to Idaho Falls, but Nico Popa did everything in his power to keep his team in it this week. The University of Pittsburgh product went 17-for-28 with two homers and three doubles while stealing three bases, scoring seven runs and driving in 10. In the Rockies' 11-7 win on Saturday, Popa went 5-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs. The 24-year-old now leads the league in hits and ranks fourth in batting average and fifth in RBIs.
