Pickles win streak ends with loss to Cowlitz

Portland, Ore. - The Pickles (17-9) fell 7-1 to the Cowlitz Black Bears (10-16) on Thursday night in the final game of the 3-game series in front of 1,577 fans at Walker Stadium. Portland won the series two games to one after clinching the first half South Division title on Wednesday to earn an August playoff spot.

Portland was outhit 12-5 in the game and also commited four errors. The game was scoreless through seven innings before the visitors landed three runs in the eighth on a three-run home run by Andres Sosa, his second of the year. Davis Delorefice ripped an RBI double to score Gio Diaz in the bottom half to make it a 3-1 deficit, his sixth RBI of the series. But Cowlitz plated four more in the top of the ninth to break the game open and seal victory, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Daniel Copeland (L 0-1) took the loss while Joey Morris (W 2-2) earned the victory in relief. Starter Jordan Martinson was very good in his start for Cowlitz, firing five innings of scoreless ball and landing fifty-two of his sixty-eight pitches for strikes (76%).

The defeat snaps Portland's six-game win streak, and twelve game home win streak. The Pickles lost the first and last home games of the seaosn's first half, but won the middle twelve consecutively.

The Pickles are first-half South Division champions, and look to get off on the right foot for the second half beginning Friday in Kelowna. First pitch is 6:35pm for the start of a three-game series at the Falcons (14-12). Then the squad returns home for a six-game home stand vs Walla Walla and Kelowna starting Tuesday, July 10th.
