Pickles Soured by Walla Walla in 9th, 2-1

July 12, 2018 - West Coast League (WCL) - Portland Pickles News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Pickles fell 2-1 Wednseday in game two of the series with the Walla Walla Sweets in front of 2, 077 fans at Walker Stadium, the sixth consecutive sellout.

Portland allowed a bases-loaded walk in the third and a two-out throwing error in the ninth that pushed across the only runs for the road Sweets in the victory.

Pickles hitters struck out sixteen times against Walla Walla pitching led by starter Hayden King, who pitched five innings allowing one run while scattering six hits and striking out eleven of the twenty-two hitters he faced. Portland starter Brad McVay went four innings in the no-decision, allowing a run in the third while allowing just three hits and one walk, the bases-loaded pass that forced a run.

Portland took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jack Murphy ripped a two-out double off the wall in right-center, scoring his St Mary's College teammate Gio Diaz from first base. Walla Walla tied it in the third, then zeroes went up on the board until the ninth. Daniel Copeland pitched three innings of scoreless relief, and Damon Treadwell sent down the Sweets in order in the eighth, keeping things tied 1-1.

Colby Wyatt retired the first two hitters he faced in the top of the ninth before catcher Josh Prizina lined a two-out double into the left field corner. Darius Vines, Thursday's probable starter for the visitors, pinch-ran for Prizina at second. Dancing off the bag and eventually bolting for third, Vines induced a pick off throw from Wyatt to second base that went into center field, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Portland went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 2-1 final.

The Pickles are 2-3 in the second half of the season after already clinching a playoff spot by winning the South division in the first half. They are 19-12 overall. The Sweets are 3-2 in the second half, 18-14 overall.

The rubber game of the series is Thursday, first pitch at 7:05pm.
