Portland, Ore. - Zander Clarke hit two home runs, the Pickles pitching staff allowed one hit, and Portland raced out to a 16-0 victory over Bend in front of 2, 377 fans at Walker Stadium in the series opener.
In their last four games the Pickles have totaled 50 runs and 55 hits.
Clarke hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Joey Cooper also lifted a two-run blast in the opening frame. Clarke went yard again in the fourth with a first-pitch grand slam, a no-doubter to left center. Zander has 3 homers in the West Coast League and four homers across all games. He also added a pair of doubles, a walk and a hit by pitch. He finished with 7 RBI. In his last four games, Clarke is 13-for-19 with three home runs, 12 RBI, and five runs scored.
Portland hit four home runs in the game between Clarke's two, Cooper's blast and Daniel Lopez's two-run homer in the sixth. Portland scored in 7 of their 8 offensive innings.
On the mound the Pickles racked up nineteen strikeouts, matching a season-high. Brad McVay went four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk and strikeout out eight. Alex Roth (W 1-0) went the next four innings, allowing no runs and no hits, walking two and striking out nine. Adam Davenport retired three in a row in a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
The victory puts Portland in a tie with Walla Walla at the top of the South Division with a record of 13-8. The Sweets were idle Friday, and open a critical three-game series at Corvallis (12-8) on Saturday.
The Pickles have a double header Saturday beginning with a non-league game against Gresham at 1pm followed by game two of the series with Bend at 7:05pm.
