
Picard-Hooper and Maletto win TELUS player of the week awards

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, December 31, 2007 - Saint John Sea Dogs forward Alexandre Picard-Hooper and Shawinigan Cataractes goaltender Kevin Maletto today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from December 27 to 30.
The offensive player of the week award goes to Alexandre Picard-Hooper of the Saint John Sea Dogs. In three games, Picard-Hooper scored four goals on fourteen shots, and added seven helpers for a total of eleven points that led his team to three consecutive wins. During that sequence, he compiled a plus 6 differential and participated to eleven of the nineteen goals his team scored (58%). He enjoyed his best game of the week on Friday night versus the Acadie-Bathurst Titan as he registered a spectacular new team record with six points (one goal and five assists) in a 9-2 victory. The next day, in a 6-4 win against Lewiston, he added four points to his record with a performance of two goals and two assists. The Montreal native center compiles an excellent record of 38 points in 27 games since the beginning of the season.
His teammates with the Sea Dogs, Scott Howes (4-6-10) and Chris DiDomenico (3-6-9), as well as François Bouchard (2-7-9) of Baie-Comeau were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Kevin Maletto of the Shawinigan Cataractes. In three games, including two road starts, the Cat's goaltender helped his team earn six points in the TELUS division standings by registering three wins while posting a 0.71 goals-against-average and .975 save percentage.
After he blocked 29 shots in a 3-1 win on Thursday night in Rimouski, Maletto stepped-in the game in the middle of the first period against Rouyn-Noranda while his team was trailing down 3-0. The Cataractes backstop made 19 saves and saw his teammates score six consecutive goals to steal the game. Then Sunday, in Val-d'Or, he stopped 30 shots in a convincing 8-1 victory over the Foreurs. Actually ranked fourth overall in the QMJHL, the Longueuil native netminder now has sixteen wins since the start of the 2007-08 campaign and has a 2.66 goals-against-average and a .901 save percentage.
Goaltender Antoine Lafleur (2-0-0; 124 MIN; 2.41 GAA; .939 SAV %) of PEI as well as defensemen Marc-André Dorion (1-5-6; +6) of Baie-Comeau and Maxime Pomerleau (1-3-4; +1) of St. John's were also considered.
