Phoenix Rising FC News Release
PHOENIX - Phoenix Rising FC rolled to a second-consecutive 4-0 win, this time over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, in front of 6,077 fans at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. It also marked the club's third consecutive clean sheet in just eight days.
Former Switchbacks player Kevaughn Frater capped off the night's scoring. Midfielder Gladson Awako scored his first goal of the year while Chris Cortez became the new club leader in goals with his 13th.
It was the first-time scorer, Awako, who got things started. In the 65th minute Colorado Springs went down a man after Jordan Burt received a straight red for his collision with Rising goalkeeper Zac Lubin.
Three minutes later, Shaft Brewer Jr. sent a shot on target that the goalkeeper spilled out in front of him. Awako pounced on the loose ball and made it 1-0.
Then, the floodgates opened.
In the 74th minute, Awako sent in a corner kick the was defected in front of the box and then fell to defender Jospeh Farrell who wasted no time putting the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, in the 80th minute, it was an Awako free kick into the box that caused danger. But Awako found his target in Cortez, who outlept everyone in the box to head home his 13th goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.
Frater finished everything off in stoppage time of the match. With the ball in the middle of the pitch, Awako lofted a pass into the right side of the box to an open Frater, who took his time and beat the keeper easy for a 4-0 lead.
Phoenix Rising will have some downtime before getting back into action. The club returns home for the final match of its three-match Home stand on Wednesday, September 5, against Rio Grande FC. It'll be $1 beer night presented by Bud Light and the match will kickoff at 7:00 pm.
