Phoenix FC News Release
TEMPE, Ariz. - Phoenix FC announces today that it has acquired goalkeeper Eduardo "Lalo" Fernandez from Real Salt Lake on loan for the game versus Antigua Barracuda FC this Thursday night. The single-game deal will allow Fernandez to return to Utah for a match with the RSL reserve team on July 16, and a return to Phoenix FC for additional matches if possible. Fernandez is already in Phoenix and working out with the Wolves.
Fernandez, 20, has served as a backup choice at goal for Real Salt Lake this season, and he has played five matches for the 2013 Real Salt Lake reserve team including the 0-0 draw on June 15 against Phoenix FC in Tempe.
Because he was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and raised in El Paso, Texas, Fernandez has represented both countries on the youth level. He played for the Mexican U-17 squad and he has trained with the US U-20 team, and has yet to commit to either the US or Mexico should he be called to play.
Fernandez has spent time playing for RSL's academy in Casa Grande, helping to establish the academy in its first year as a member of the US Soccer Development Academy. He made 11 appearances that season, going 5-3-3 with 4 shutouts.
Fernandez has also played professionally in Uruguay and in the youth system of Mexican First Dvision club CD Chivas de Guadalajara.
Fernandez is expected to get the starting nod when Phoenix FC hosts Antigua Barracuda FC this Thursday night at Grand Canyon University for a 7:30pm match.
