Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Brent Kelly scored at 1:54 of overtime to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 3-2 victory on the road at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Sunday evening.
It was the second point of the night for Kelly who also assisted on winger Pat Kavanagh's short-handed goal that tied the game late in the second period. Kavanagh, the former B-Sen, also had two points in the game as he picked up an assist on Kelly's overtime tally.
The Senators and Phantoms exchanged goals during regulation with winger Steve Martins putting Binghamton on top 1-0 at 9:54 of the first period. But only 20 seconds later, winger Ryan Ready tied the score at 1-1 for Philadelphia.
Binghamton's Greg Johnson then scored his fourth goal in four games to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead at 12:29 of the second period.
After a sluggish first period in which the Senators took only four shots, the team tallied 17 in the second period and finished with 35 for the game. Philadelphia's Martin Houle stopped 33 of the shots to earn third star honors. Binghamton's Kelly Guard was the second star after stopping 38 of 41 shots.
Both teams were scoreless on eight power-play opportunities. Binghamton has now gone three games without allowing a power-play goal despite ranking near the bottom of the American Hockey League in penalty-killing proficiency.
The Senators return to action on Wednesday morning with an 11:15 a.m. game in Norfolk, Virginia against the Admirals.
