Philadelphia Wings Fall 14-7 in Rochester on Saturday
April 6, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings collected their fifth straight loss of the season at the hands of the Rochester Knighthawks, losing 14-7 on the road in New York on Saturday night.
What started as an intense goalie battle with neither team scoring for the first eight minutes of the game, ended rather lopsided in favor of the Knighthawks. Rochester scored five times in the second quarter, leading 8-4 at halftime and never looked back. Despite a strong third quarter that saw the Wings gain momentum with three goals, Rochester never let Philadelphia back within three goals.
Philadelphia's offense was unable to convert on the power play, going one for six on the night and couldn't find a way to break Rochester goalie Matt Vinc a man up or otherwise. Vinc's 45 saves on 52 shots held the Wings to their lowest offensive output of the season at only seven goals. Despite having seven different players score, no Wings player was able to find the back of the net more than once on the night. Drew Westervelt, Brendan Mundorf and Kevin Ross had three points apiece on a goal and two assists each.
Rochester was led by Johnny Powless' three goals and Cody Jamieson's six assists. Former Wings player, Dan Dawson had five points for the Knighthawks on two goals and three assists.
With three games remaining on the season, the door on the Wings playoff hopes remains cracked, as Philadelphia is now tied for fourth place in the East with Buffalo. The Wings sit three and a half games behind division leading Toronto and a game and a half behind second place Rochester.
The Wings have little time to dwell on the loss in Rochester as they head home to play the Minnesota Swarm Sunday at Wells Fargo Center at 4 p.m. For the team's Cancer Awareness Night, on Sunday the Wings will wear retro grey jerseys to be auctioned off following the game to benefit the RENK Foundation for brain cancer awareness and the Chris Sanderson Memorial Trust.
Tickets for Sunday's game at Wells Fargo Center are available online at WingsLAX.com, by phone at 215-389-WING or at the Wells Fargo Center box office.
