Philadelphia Wings Enter Span of Four Games in Nine Days
January 8, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) return to action this weekend with back-to-back games after their first bye week. They look to continue their strong production on offense. Philadelphia begins their weekend on the road facing the Rochester Knighthawks at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY on Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Wings return to Philadelphia for their home opener at the Wells Fargo Center against the Buffalo Bandits on Sunday, January 12 at 4 p.m.
The Wings will play their first of three match-ups in the 2014 season with two-time defending NLL champion Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. Rochester leads the overall series against Philadelphia (31-18). The last meeting between the two was a memorable matchup in the Quarter Finals of the 2013 NLL Playoffs, with Rochester edging the Wings 10-8.
"This is a huge test for us facing the defending champs this weekend," said Head Coach Blane Harrison. "The Knighthawks are a proven winner with plenty of experience and veteran leadership."
Philadelphia saw steady production from multiple members of their squad in their season opener against Buffalo. One player in particular, Jordan Hall, will be facing his former squad in Rochester. Hall is currently ranked second in the NLL for goals scored with five.
Looking ahead to Sunday's home opener, the Wings will try for their first win at the Wells Fargo Center in the 2014 season. Philadelphia meets Buffalo for the second time during the 2014 campaign and leads the season series after a 17-13 win during week one. The Bandits are led by Forwards Ryan Benesch (2 Goals, 1 Assist) and John Tavares (3 Assists) who were both voted as Top 25 players in the NLL for 2014 by ILIndoor.com.
"We expect Buffalo to play with a little extra motivation to get back at us for defeating them at home during week one," said Harrison. "Sunday [January, 12] will be a battle for us."
Following back-to-back contests against Rochester and Buffalo this weekend, Philadelphia faces the Minnesota Swarm for a home-and-home series Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19. The Wings host Minnesota at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, January 18 at 12 p.m. The following night, Minnesota welcomes the Wings to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN at 3 p.m.
