Philadelphia Soul News Release
SAN JOSE, CA â The Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League faced the San Jose SaberCats today in their first scrimmage of the 2004 inaugural season. As is club policy during the preseason, the official score was not recorded.
"I was impressed with the competitive nature of our guys," said head coach Michael Trigg. "We challenged the guys at halftime and they came out and rallied. We need to watch the film and digest the fact that this is the first time that we've been out there. This team has a lot upside, that's for sure."
The Soul recorded two defensive scores in the fourth quarter, an eight-yard fumble return by Nate Bell after Travis McDonald sacked San Jose QB Nick Rolovich. Rolovich was then picked off later in the final quarter by Kevin Mason, who scored on the 45-yard return.
Philadelphia native Sean Scott and QB Todd Hammel connected for a 40-yard TD reception just before halftime. Scott ended the night with two receptions for a game-high 55-yards.
Chris "Soul Train" Ryan rushed three times for 10-yards including a three-yard TD run in the first quarter.
The Soul will return to Tri-State Sports Center on Friday, January 23 for practice at 8:30 a.m.
The Soul will face the New York Dragons this Wednesday, January 28th at 7 p.m. at the Wachovia Spectrum. The scrimmage is closed to the public; however, players and coaches will be available to the media for comments following the scrimmage.
On Thursday, January 29th, the team will host a preseason pep rally for season ticket holders at 8 p.m. Bon Jovi will perform at the pep rally, following an Arena Football 101 session to acclimate fans with the rules of the game.
The Soul will kick off their inaugural season on Sunday, February 8th at 3 p.m. against the New Orleans Voodoo at the Wachovia Center and featured on NBC Sports. For more information on season tickets and group sales, call 215-636-0421 or visit www.philadelphiasoul.com.
