Philadelphia Soul News Release
The Soul is coming back to Philadelphia this April as part of the new-look Arena Football League (AFL). The historic franchise has a legacy of on-field success, having won 3 championships in 6 appearances, the most recent victory in 2018.
"The Philadelphia Soul has a historical connection to arena football that no other team or league can overshadow," AFL Commissioner Lee Hutton said. "It is with pride that the Soul returns and with leadership that desires to be in Philadelphia." The ownership group, Logan Venture Group, will be led by Philadelphia native and former professional basketball player Mustafa Shakur, and features prominent sports, entertainment, and business leaders. Shakur also serves as Co-President of the better-for-you food and beverage company, Pure Fuel, a minority-owned brand founded and operated in Philadelphia.
Shakur shared his enthusiasm, stating, "The Soul is a storied AFL team with a rich history-both of winning championships and providing top quality entertainment to the people of our great city and state. I remember watching the Soul growing up in Philly and know first-hand the sense of pride and community it brought us. I'm honored to be part of continuing its legacy in a new era of arena football."
Under Shakur's leadership, Patrick Pimmel will serve as the team's head coach. He has over 30 years Coaching Football at various levels. Including the Orlando Predators and most recently the Las Vegas Night Hawks.
The Philadelphia Soul has an exciting lineup of announcements in the pipeline, including the introduction of their talented staff, key partnerships, and an immersive Arena experience. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.
The announcement comes after the league previously introduced a multitude of franchises, such as the Louisiana Voodoo, Nashville Kats, Oregon Blackbears, lowa Rampage, Wichita Regulators, Salina Liberty, The Southwest Kansas Storm, Rapid City Marshals, Albany Firebirds, Washington Wolfpack, Orlando Predators, Billings Outlaws and West Texas Desert Hawks.
