Philadelphia Liberty Belles News Release
SOUTHAMPTON, PA â Ever wonder what it would be like to play full-tackle football? Ever wonder what it would be like to be a woman who plays full-tackle football? Find out from the women who do it themselves. On Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 10 AM â 12:30 PM members of the Liberty Belles, Philadelphia's own woman's football team will speak to Delaware State University students about just that.
The Liberty Belles are members of a select group of women across the country who play tackle football in a national league. Everyday women like the rest of us, they leave behind their daytime roles of mothers and career-women to risk bruises and muscle-aches as they run, tackle and score on the field. It's no easy feat, but one the Belles truly enjoy. What makes them do it? What keeps them coming back? To answer these questions are Megan McGinness, Melissa McVaugh and Dion Linderman, all Liberty Belles players in their rookie season and Rachelle Pecovsky, a veteran running back from the first season. Hear their stories in their own words, as they address the students of Delaware State University on April 10 at 10:00 AM. Find out how they got started, why they wanted to be a Liberty Belle and what they think lies in store for the future of women playing full-tackle football.
The Philadelphia Liberty Belles are one of 10 charter teams of the National Women's Football League www.NWFLcentral.com that burst onto the scene in 2001. Under the guidance of team owner and General manager Marie Olsen and the direction of head coach Russ Carfagno the Philadelphia Liberty Belles played an 8-1 season culminating in winning the Pat Windham-Harvey Bowl to become League Champs. The Liberty Belles play home games at A.A. Garthwaite field in Conshohocken, PA. in front of crowds of over 2500 fans. Games are held Saturday evenings at 7:05 PM. Visit the Belles' website at www.philadelphiabelles.com and learn more about the team and its players or contact the team at 1-866-4-BELLES for tickets and information.
