Philadelphia Freedoms News Release
Philadelphia, PA (April 10, 2002) - The Philadelphia Freedoms selected Australian standout Todd Reid with their first pick in the WTT Roster Draft. Reid, was a finalist in the 2002 Australian Open Junior Tournament and is currently the top ranked junior in Australia.
WTT veteran and former Wimbledon and French Open doubles champion Jonathan Stark was drafted in the next round. Stark is a former all-American at Stanford and a past U.S. Davis Cup team member.
After being diagnosed with Leukemia in the Spring of 2001, Morariu has successfully battled her way back and will join the WTT Pro League for the first time since 1998. She has captured eleven doubles titles, including the 1999 Wimbledon Doubles Champion with Lindsay Davenport.
The team was rounded out by WTT veteran, Jessica Steck, winner of four ITF singles events. Steck was a member of the South African Fed Cup team and has wins over Anna Kournikova and Anna Smashnova. After the completion of the Roster Draft, the Freedoms traded the rights of Meghann Shaughnessy to Hartford for future considerations and attained the rights to Alexandra Stevenson from Delaware.
"After evaluating the chemistry of the team and the placing the right players on a playing surface they prefer, we traded Meghann Shaughnessy, acquired the rights to Alexandra Stevenson and gained a draft pick to select Corina Morariu," said team General Manager, Jeff Harrison. " We wanted to build a strong consistent team that will compete for another WTT Championship."
The season schedule will be released in late April. For more information about the Philadelphia Freedoms or to purchase tickets for the 2002 season, call 1-866-wtt-tixs or visit us at www.philadelphiafreedoms.com
